@ runtime my C: drive has 65.8 Gb free space; it begins to disappear immediately, running entirely out of space in an hour or so - it returns & repeats the process on reboot.

This began to occur about the same time my programs began this "not responding" crap, it is so bad the machine can now only be run it safe mode. (The space does not disappear in safe mode.)
I have never seen anything quite like this; any ideas?

I found out what it was; there was a folder entitled PC Tools, that kept writing data to an XML file.

What Malware program do you have?
Did you install PCTools? Always good to run a complete virus scan just in case.
Have you tried the new free Microsoft Security Essentials?

Good Luck

I did not install PC Tools, it must have piggy backed in on something else.

I use Webroot's Spy Sweeper, Micro$oft's Malicious Software Removal Tool & Nod Antivirus; full sweeps indicate no malware, etc.

I haven't tried M$ Security Essentials, I'll check out a review & see how it performs.

Run MSE and malwarebytes, this will give you a good indication of a problem

Your virus software, may actually be part of the problem, it uses too much of your resources.
