disc needs to be checked for consistency

while I'm trying to log into windows 7 it is displaying this message "One of your disc needs to checked for consistency..."
Is there any way to stop this process. Please find me a solution to this problem, the point to be noted here is I'm not able to enter windows 7 at all. I'm currently posting this by logging into windows 7 safe mode.

I'm wondering if Windows is trying to check consistency, maybe by running chkdsk? Maybe it's doing that and you aren't giving it enough time.

For how long have you left the PC alone when you first see that message? A thorough chkdsk can take hours.

I left my system for almost 2 hrs alone, still it was not complete so shut it down forcefully.

This indicates problems with your HD. Run the maker's Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure extended CD scan, followed by a full http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html which will tell you by the results whether the drive needs replacing.

Also I would not interrupt the process as that could cause more problems in the future. It can take a very long time to complete a large hard drive.
