OK, for those that have AMD cards, AMD has released a new driver to improve performance issuse in the game.

Elder Scrolls Skyrim

o Improves performance 2-7% on single GPU configurations
o Resolve corruption seen when enabling Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing on the AMD Radeon HD 6970 Series
o Disables CrossFireX (to resolve negative scaling and image quality issues seen when CrossFireX is enabled)
§ AMD is continuing to work on a CrossFireX solution for Skyrim – as soon as it’s ready we’ll make it publicly available

And speaking of frame drops....

In Skyrim has anyone been to the Mages College? If you have have you noticed stuttering as you get closer to entering the building?

I've seen this no where else in the game but at the college. In that area you have lots of snow and the lighting effects



The funny thing is is once you get insdie the building, which has way more going on the frames pick back up



This is 100 percent reproducible for me. It doesn’t kill the game play but you definitely notice the frame drops.

Anyone else experience this?

nothing to contribute right now, except i'll be on the lookout for mage's college and will try to remember to report any framerate issues.

Playing on the PC here with things turned up just a tad too high so I get bits of frame rate stuttering now and then all over. Not enough to get me to want to turn down the draw istance or use a lower resolution, just right on the edge

Well my game is at max settings at 1920x1080 and so far the only stuttering I got was in the Mages college area outside. That's it thus far. I'm going to give the new ATI drivers a try and visit that area again and see what happens. Will post the results once I'm done.

BTW Bethesda's stuttering problems experienced in all their games, well the ones I played - Fallout 3, New Vegas, Oblivion, hasn't been much of an issue for me in Skyrim other than the area I mentioned.

Now the one issue I do have is the mouse sometimes loses focus when viewing your inventory.

And I did have this one weird issue where my mouse quit working altogether while I was fighting some flying wizard guy - all of a sudden I couldn't use the mouse to turn or use weapons - I had to restart the game to get it working again. Just weird.

Ditto.

Just waiting for the patch near Thanksgiving. Supposed to address some of the performance issues. Also the lower framerates compounded also due to Vsync being enabled I've heard. You can turn it off in the ini if you want. I'm sure you already know that though. I know you visit tweakguides.com.

I've been keeping an eye on the mods and such but I've been so busy playing I've not spent any time yet actually applying anything

I upped my stuttering a bit when I upped the popup distance some. Playing at 1920x1200 on a 480 which is like last years card now.

I should take a break and spend some time tweaking this weekend

I actually tried the V-Sync turn off tweak and I got texture tearing and bad lag using that tweak. Yes, I used the one posted here - TweakGuides.com - Archived News

To disable VSync you must add iPresentInterval=0 under [Display] in Skyrim.ini, not SkyrimPrefs.ini, otherwise it won't work

BTW I just tried the new drivers and the lag at the mages college is reduced somewhat but you still notice it. So in that area, the drivers did improve the game a little.

Haven't done any other playing other than checking that area to say if there's a vast improvement yet though.


Also there was a small patch released to tie the launcher to Steam but....

A tiny patch to Skyrim has disabled many of file tweaks that players have been making to improve Skyrim’s visuals. RPS noticed growing annoyance on the Skyrim forums as players discovered that the popular Large Address Aware tweak that lets Skyrim recognise more than 2GB of ram on 64 bit systems has stopped working since the update.

Boy you guys are fast, I've only killed 5 dragons. I've been all over the place doing side quests and and things. In fact I'm only at level 22

I actually did this, sort of.

I disabled Vsync in the ini, but also turned off AA and AF in the launcher.

But, in the Nvidia Control Panel, I forced Vsync On, and x4AA and x16AF.


I was getting odd outlines on occasions (not consistantly) with the games AA. Depending on the lightling, it would sometime be like a faint halo around things (usually my character). Best I can describe what I was seeing.
For whatever reason, forcing all 3 of these options in the NCP helped resolve the majority of small issues I was seeing.

This all helped a bit overall for my Nvidia setup, but I would guess it would help AMD cards too?
I think the game just has issues right now with Vsync and AA.

ive killed 6 dragons and im level 9 lol.

Its funny whenever i look at walkthroughs on youtube everyone at the same part as me is at least 10 levels higher than me lol.

I dont do the whole exploration thing, i just get from one quest to the next. you can tell im not a regular RPG player.

The last 4-5 dragons I've come across I've gotten hosed on. Two of them I could never get their attention and after flying around ignoring me for 5 mintes flew off. One I killed but was too overloaded to take the bones and scales so went home to unload and when I came back the skeleton was gone :/ (Note: loot dragon and drop bones/scales on ground before leaving) And the last one I killed was on a hillside and the dragon wouldn't stop "moving" after it died and I didn't get to abosrb it's soul. It just layed there dead but twitching and never burned away

To V-Sync or not.....

For those thinking about turning off V-Sync check this thread out - Do NOT disable vSync! - Bethesda Softworks Forums

I reported earlier that I had tearing and bad stuttering when I disabled V-Sync on my game - http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/198691-discuss-skyrim.html#post1668504

Anyway just something to think about before trying the tweak.

Been hooked on this game for a week now. It's rare these days that a game so completely captures my imagination and reminds me of the books I used to read as a kid to escape life.. before PC's.

I'm currently at level 27, grinding my way through every side quest and random cave I can find without actually taking a side in the civil war or advancing the main story line too far.


I've also explored the Nexus mods that are freely available... if you're really into this game, there's a couple mods worth checking out. All of these mods are available through the Nexus website.

1) Vurts Foliage Mods: These mods greatly increase the quality of the trees. Good stuff when you're tromping about Skyrim, looking for the next " Oh wow... " moment. (Most likely requires an enthusiast gaming PC)

2) FXAA post process injector: Does wonderful things for the overall look of Skyrim by increasing the saturation, bloom and other graphical effects in-game. You can tweek your settings by editing the .ini file that is installed on your Skyrim directory. (Most likely requires an enthusiast gaming PC)

3) Detailed Faces, Bodies and eyes : Basic graphic enhancements that improve the look of the NPC's you deal with.

4) Nude Females : Yes.. this is an adult mod. It only changes what is underneath female NPC armor.. should you decide to remove it once they are dead.... ( Protip: Holding down "E" over an object allows you to move it )

5) Large Address RAM Mod : Removes the RAM cap on any .exe. This lets you allow the Skyrim.exe to use as much RAM as it needs. Only recommended for those with high RAM systems.


There are new mods every day, some great... some not so great. All in all, the texture and graphical mods are worth looking into. They are extremely easy to install (Copy and Paste into the right location in the Skyrim directory)
