Solved Disk cleanup suggestions manual or in a program

Paul, I've been carefully, surgically, using reg-cleaners ever since win 3.11, even editing ini files. And, have been using Revo Uninstaller Pro for some, I think since W98se. You ready for this, really ready for this?? -- I even have and use Resplendence's Registrar Registry Maintenance, it was part of a bundle deal.

I have just had a quick look at their website. It is what you would expect from professional software, and certainly not for Novice users.

Obviously not everyone is an Advanced Power User [like we are] as you can see from some of the replies!

We are power users in some areas, in other areas - maybe not so much Also, we are saved by restorable backup images many times throughout the years. I remember for a short time using Iomega Zip drives and software, moved onto Norton Ghost, onto Acronis True Image, now using Macrium Reflect and Image For Windows.

So you're very careful, but do you have any proof that it improved your computers in any manner? Otherwise it was wasted time. I have 4 computers, 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there...Are you retired?

I wouldn't be without Revo Uninstaller, especially the Advanced Scan option [scan for leftover items].

Always advanced, otherwise you could run the Windows one(puke) Years ago I unistalled RealPlayer using the MS Uninstaller, then checked with Revo. Revo found 1500 more RP registry entries. MAJOR DUST BUNNIES! but does it matter? It's just a text file.

Oh YES!

Unless the whole computer dies, mobo for instance, then you have an extra HD that's no good in any machine. that's why I have multiple machines all running the same OS and similar programs.

Well, I substitute teach during the week in 3 ISDs I vacuum the dust bunnies probably 3-4 times yearly. mostly quarterly.

One answer: One thing I've been doing for some time: after making shortcuts to appdata local temp directory, windows temp directory, I use those shortcuts to goto said directories and delete everything found therein, mostly just before making image backups.

...also Prefetch and Recent directories can be safely cleaned out from time to time. One can Ccleaner or anything similar to clean browser cache, browser cache only, nothing else concerning the browser pots. Wise Disk Cleaner, if used carefully and surgically, can be used to clean up lots of byte-space stuff.

All the utilities we mentioned have temp-file cleaners, and this one cleans ONLY temp files in both temp folders, but it requires a restart after.

Don't touch anything in AppData except Temp and Recent. Other folders there are settings and profiles for many of your programs. And Recent will keep refilling if you empty it. It's the record of recent accessed files that appears in your Start Menu>Documents.
It's easiest just to use a utility that does several kinds of cleaning at once.

I recommend that you run my my batch script from here => Useful Batch Files - Extended_Disk_Cleanup.bat.

Check the appropriate boxes for the items that you want cleaned and press [OK].

Apologies. Just a delay. I had a question out about the 'dust bunnies' program and didn't hear any
expansion on it. And your tool someone said took a long time to run. I'm just reviewing the thread today.

There may be some othet posts I have to catch up on. Plus I usually report any success I've had whenever that happens.

My Disk Cleanup - Extended is mainly for users that don't wish to download and install third-party software. It also allows you to choose what you want to delete!

Yes I'm catching up on what I missed and the diversions. Let me ask it this way: As with a virus cleaner suite, is there a preferred sequence of using these tools in a series of steps? I am not a power user just an old one.

It may be useful to others for a how- to. If such a thing is written already, say the word. Good to see others are using some softwares familiar to me like Revo Uninstaller.

I think I mentioned reg-cleaners can remove entries pointing to non-existent folders or files or program files...and other things.
