Solved Disk cleanup suggestions manual or in a program

I'll start on this today with the .bat program.

Unless the whole computer dies, mobo for instance, then you have an extra HD that's no good in any machine. that's why I have multiple machines all running the same OS and similar programs.

Yes I have multiples here too. All old stuff but serviceable. The big advantage to me is being able to
pull off an HD for clone backup and use one of the others with Ol' Norton ghost for the long time it takes to complete.

Well, I substitute teach during the week in 3 ISDs I vacuum the dust bunnies probably 3-4 times yearly. mostly quarterly.

One answer: One thing I've been doing for some time: after making shortcuts to appdata local temp directory, windows temp directory, I use those shortcuts to goto said directories and delete everything found therein, mostly just before making image backups.

I didn't know how safe any of that is but I'll be looking to do that. The Everything file search program
has several options to install, the default is the App/Roaming whatevs folder area. I suppose it has advantage of displaying all the unneeded first?

In order I'm running chkdsk /f, chkdsk/ r and will run the disk cleanup extended following that,then Glary and TFC.


The link to Disk Cleanup Extened has a lot of tools and diagnostic info in it.
An impressive help file. I don't know how I could get through everything, so will stick with
the cleaners for now. TFC is at Bleeeping Computer, another site I'm slightly familiar with.
The name OldTimer I know from from someplace-- I've seen it in the Major Geeks virus cleaners
suite but that was quite a long time back. So many of those things have become dated and the new
ones (freeware) I'm not aware of for lack of need.

You are ONLY interested in the one below. To make it easier for you, I have inserted it below, just click the link next to Click here [direct download] =>. Save it to the desktop, double-click the file, and select Option 2 . . .

Disk Cleanup - Extended . . .

Click here [direct download] => Disk_Cleanup_Extended.bat.

This allows you to free up HDD space by deleting temporary and not needed files etc from the HDD. It is an extension [advanced version] of the standard disk cleanup tool that allows hidden options to become available allowing you to clean up even more HDD space.

Check the appropriate boxes for the items that you want cleaned and press [OK].

It doesn't matter because what you have run upto now will not harm your computer, unless you ran Software Distribution Folder - Rename.

When you select Option 2, it gives you the items that ARE available to clean. If you DON'T want to clean a particular item, then you just UNTICK the box.

Paul, I forgot which thread, somebody mentioned not having mouse control during restore. Same for me with MR restore. Next time, when making USB boot, should I "tell" MR to add DVD-CD boot files? Will that give me mouse control?

After running all those other tools, it completed very quickly. I am back and everything is still on, though this is an old disk and not much on it.

We are power users in some areas, in other areas - maybe not so much Also, we are saved by restorable backup images many times throughout the years. I remember for a short time using Iomega Zip drives and software, moved onto Norton Ghost, onto Acronis True Image, now using Macrium Reflect and Image For Windows.

Since this is the Power User discussion, what is the best backup strategy?
Can, for instance a restorable backup image stored on the problem drive and reinserted into boot position like a drag and drop?


I find it all confusing and always have so I've stuck with disk clone in Ghost and enough redundant HDs.

I also know there's a lot enthusiam for Macrium which, for any reasons a 'novice' might have, find it intimidating. Maybe this should be a separate topic or, as with these cleaner tutorials, there is a link you can provide that shows a step by step procedure.

In the Extended.bat I ticked most everything but the box related to programs. I would have screen shot that but couldn't expand to see the whole list. It's a good and thorough batch file program though.

appdata local temp directory, windows temp directory; c:\users\[acctname]\AppData\Local\Temp and c:\Windows\Temp are the two I mentioned. If I had known of PBlack's batchfiles, I would not have needed to make a collection of icons

I don't recommend storing any backup file on the same HD containing the OS and/or the data partitions. Recommend all backup images be stored on at least one if not two external USB HDDs. I can't remember which Windows you have. I have Windows 7 Professional, so I make full images of both the System Reserved and the OS partitions -- two images, which, if restore is needed, both are restored.

Presently, I use both Macrium Reflect and Image for Windows equally, alternately.
