I understand now that it will delete selected files. Most likely, I will not know what many of them are and/or if I need them for all to run properly. Is there some kind of list, somewhere, that will explain, or at least suggest, which/what type of files to delete?

I use Disk Cleanup. Its good! It cleans the disk. After I do the Disk Cleanup, I then run the defragmenter. It also cleans up files from Windows Update.

For many people the native (built-in) Windows tools like disk cleanup and disk defragmenter do a perfectly adequate job. Other people like using free 3rd party tools like CCleaner or one of these free defragmenters. And here are some other suggestions on how to keep your Windows 7 optimized.
But a word of caution: no matter what you decide to use it would be a good idea to create at least a restore point (or better still, a full system image) just in case something breaks.
