Disk problems, chkdsk unexpected restart

Hello, I've been having some hard drive problems with my Lenovo laptop.

After a recent restart my computer automatically booted into startup repair. There it ran for around 12 hours saying "repairing disk errors" before I forced closed it.

I then tried booting into safe mode, but after selecting safe mode it just redirected automatically to startup repair.

I closed the computer again and managed to get to the recovery environment command prompt, where I ran chkdsk /r.

It ran very slowly, found some bad sectors and indexes, but it was seemingly making progress and recovering bad files.

Then it got midway through stage 4 and the computer suddenly restarted, not finishing chkdsk and booting into startup repair again.

Now I'm trying to run chkdsk again, but I'm back at the start.

I'll try one more time, but if it crashes midway through again, what should I do?

Welcome to the forum. If its found bad sectors and taking forever the disk is bad if it recovers files they may well be corrupt. Your only option is to get a new drive and do a clean install. On NO account try cloning the bad drive as it will copy bad sectors to new drive and cant be changed.
You could goto the disk makers site and get their free test software which will confirm its state

I found very conflicting opinions online on whether bad sectors always indicate a failing disk, a lot of people say some bad sectors are OK or even usual. There are also people saying chkdsk, especially chkdsk /r can run for a very long time.

It can take a long time depending on the size and type of disk. We dont know your hardware because you haven't filled in your system specs.

As stated the best way is to get disk makers test that will tell you for sure. as a disk get bad sectors they are remapped to engineering tracks you dont see this so once you see bad sectors there is all ready a lot. once you have run chkdsk if you run it again it wont show bad bit as they are marked as not there

Can you tell what the DISM and SFC commands for Win 7 are? DISM restore health doesn't seem to work.

Hi,
DISM wasnt really set up for W7 users, you need to run KB947821.. SURT (system update readiness tool)
it is the predeccesor for W7

sfc /scannow is the command

Hello, I ran SFC /scannow and got the error that it can't run because there's a system repair pending (like I mentioned, the computer automatically boots into system repair).

I then ran DISM /image:E:\ /scratchdir:E:\scratch /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions, which is supposed to be a legitimate command even for Windows 7.

I got error 1016: "An error occurred while attempting to access the image."

I'll try to get the log file.

NO

DISM was not designed for W7, you have to use the KB i gave you.
because there is a sytem repair in progress we need to stop it, so your in a stable mode

from the reset you need to access command mode during the repair stage set-up and use insert this line, to cancel it
ADMIN Command Prompt
then In the popup window, type the following command and hit Enter to continue.
del X:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml

The command is to revert a pending update

Yes and yes.

Some of the errors I got were (writing approximately):

Failed to access PE provider. Continuing assuming this is not a PE image.

(E:\) is not a mountable WIM.

Failed to mount something on drive.

Failed to access some msxxxxxxxxxxxxx.dll file. Relying on in-box version.

My Windows came pre installed, and I don’t have an installation disc.

Hello, I do have a recovery partition. How can I reinstall windows from a recovery partition on a Lenovo laptop if the little Novo button isn't working? Is it under the "boot from hard drive" option in the boot menu?

its not working because the original OS would have been on the "C" drive, links are broken setup
tends to imply you've been multi booting and overwritten the original setup

My OS is on the C drive, it's only on E in the recovery environment. I haven't overwritten the original setup.
