Disk space usage discrepancy

hmm why is my attached pic being displayed so small? the one that night hawk uploaded has lower number of pixel count but displayed as a bigger thumb image/? hope everyone can see the detail and know what i am talking about

The one thing noticed right off in the properties screen for C is the "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties which might be one thing to consider there. The other is things like the folders hidden from view by default as well as the 94-100mb boot sector taking up additional drive space.

Another thing to add into the mix is the drive space reserved for restore points even when you have that turned off. By default Windows will grab that initial space and tie it up.

The larger screenshot you took is simply being reduced automatically by the forum here. With various screens being different sizes to start the percentage of reduction varies. Otherwise with different browsers in use like FireFox you would be scrolling into a second screen to see the second half of large image like a post of how your desktop looks.

This is why the snipping tool was decided on here for keeping everything in one view screen. I've seen that enough with FF where.....

So are you saying local disk C properties box is lying to me by saying i have 2.75GB freespace when in fact i actually have about 100 MB free if we substract 10.1 GB from 10.2 GB? I bet you i can copy a 2GB file onto my C drive right now. maybe i should to see what it says and repost the screenshot . Have to wait for a little as i am doing a system backing of the umpc right now...

btw, i did see that if you click on the thumbnail it will zoom up the image to a bigger size and display it correctly

I corrected your original figure from 10.2 to 10.22gb the actual total when you add things up. Subtract 9.81gb from that to see 0.41gb or roughly 410mb give or take a kb there.

You also have the recycle bin. The properties of that alone show 10.1gb on the drive. The size here when looked is only 24kb! 10.1gb is the maximum you can have in it. Anything in there now?

Windows 7 is different. Cause Windows XP doesn't have hardlinks, nor does it have any junctions setup by default. On Windows XP, instead of hardlinks data is duplicated. The drive properties is the correct value. The HDD keeps track of all bits by using a bitmap, the drive properties reads this bitmap, counting every filled bit as one.
