Howdy

I am having this problem where my monitor just goes blank and then a few seconds my desktop comes back as it was before. I have been getting a message sometimes after it happens saying something like the display driver failed but has now recovered.

I had a more severe version of the problem just a little while ago where the monitor had gone to sleep and I could not wake it with the mouse. I actually had to reboot to make it work again.

Ive looked in device manager and looks ok there, This is a very new computer and has just had a fresh install a couple of days ago so I cant see it being anything major.

Help appreciated

Thanks

have you tried to re-install or update graphics card's drivers?

I only reformatted and re-installed my system 2 days ago. The whole system is less than 1 yr old. Gone to device manager and Windows tells me the graphics driver is up to date

Click the link I provided you with, and then it's Option 2, there's a grey box named Graphics Drivers; you will want to click that.

What type of cable are you connecting your PC to your monitor, I know sometimes low end HDMI cables can cause this issue.

Are you using HDMI, DVI, VGA, S-Video, etc...?

You can also try the Nvidia Beta drivers, I know sometimes the Latest Beta can fix issues that Latest Stable creates.

I am using HDMI. I have no idea on the quality of the cable. Let me see how it goes after I did the driver thing above. Ill get back to you if I continue to have problems.

Thanks

Does your video card support any other connection method that you can use to test the HDMI as possibly being the culprit, like DVI or VGA? HDMI can communicate two ways, as the video drivers are loading your GPU will quickly turn your display off and on, normally we don't see this, sometimes we can. But if your monitor doesn't like this and reports a possible display issue in response to it your drivers might crash.

I had this issue when I used HDMI to plug into my HDTV, but not monitor because my HDTV didn't like when my GPU loaded drivers and "flashed" the display.

FWIW: I have a toshiba that when checking for microsoft updates tells me that they have an updated nvidia driver for my graphics board. BIG MISTAKE
It put my laptop in never never land.
I was able to recover but it stuck in the back of my mind , never update video drivers from MS.
Now I go to the manufacturers or manufacturers (toshiba) site to update drivers.

Just a warning..

Rich

Or in the case of ATI/AMD, they actually now handle video card driver updates instead of the computer manufacturer.
