laptop is hp compaq evo n610c

specs:
Compaq Evo Notebook N610c - World Wide QuickSpecs

2 Ghz processors
1 GB RAM
windows 7 pro
I'm confused. How can you have Win7 Pro installed on this machine? It's supposed to be using WinXP Pro, not Win7 Pro. That's what those specs show.

Furthermore, according to the HP Support Site for this N610C machine, there are no drivers for this notebook under Win7.

Are you really running Win7 Pro on this machine?

yes
i had to repair it i could not get a new windows XP activation key
so i had to put on windows 7

I think your goal is unreachable. There are no Win7 drivers for this video chip in this notebook.

It is old hardware, intended for WinXP, not for Win7. There are no drivers from ATI for the Mobility 7500 in that notebook.

You may have gotten Win7 to "install", but as you can tell there are many holes in the result... such as no video drivers. This is very common trying to install Win7 on old hardware: you will very often NEVER find drivers for the old components inside the machine, such as the video chip here.

Time to upgrade your hardware to a modern machine, I'm afraid. Or reinstall WinXP as is supposed to be on this notebook. If WinXP was on that box in the first place, surely there is a WinXP product key sticker on the case or you can get it from HP, so that you can do a complete reinstall of WinXP from scratch.

Sorry... I don't have a solution for you other than these ideas.

Can't say. It honestly seems remarkable the driver for this Mobility Radeon 7500 hardware would have been specifically ignored for Windows 7 and then for some reason brought up for driver development for Windows 8.

But the HP support site does not mention Windows 8... or Windows 7.

You're sure there was a true driver for the 7500 in Windows 8? Or maybe just a generic Win8 support fo the video card which you took to be an actual driver. Even Win7 supports ALL video cards in VGA mode, without official drivers (which are needed for SVGA mode).

Anyway, I honestly have no answers for you. There are simply no official drivers available from ATI. If you think you can install Windows 8 on that notebook and it works and gives you everything you are expecting, by all means do it.

What you may be experiencing in Win8 is what I encountered on my laptop -- which uses the infamous Intel 915GM chipset. Instead of using the Intel XPDM driver from Win7, Win8 uses a generic Basic driver -- which actually works quite well.

So, if yours is using the same driver, it's not actually an ATI driver, it's a generic one from MS that works with your card.

I don't think so, because it installed automatically in my laptop. I think it was called Microsoft Basic Display Adapter -- and I first saw it in Win8. In Win7, there were actually Intel drivers that worked.

You need to go back using XP because there's no Windows 8 drivers for your Radeon 7000.
