Just aquired a computer with the display language set to French. I want it to read in English.

I know you need Ent. or Ult to make the change normally.

If I restore the computer to the Out-of-box settings, will I get the chance to choose my language during setup?

Any other option short of upgrading?

The answer to your question is yes - provided your system came with the 5 language pack (which is usually the case if French is one of the options).

There is a reason why Windows Ultimate 7 costs more than for instance Home Premium. With additional price, you get additional features like language packs which allow you to completely change the language of your Windows 7. To use any hacks or cracks to get these additional features for free is considered piracy, and at least last time I checked the Seven Forum rules, all discussion about using illegal methods to acquire software is forbidden.

Vistalizator is a pirated product. As a user of legal and valid Windows 7 Ultimate with multiple language packs, I detest this kind of information given to other members. Simply what Mike is saying is "You do not have to pay extra to get Ultimate, you can steal what you need. Here's a link to get that for free."

Because of the change in forum policy some time ago, giving negative rep is no longer possible. If it were possible, you had now gotten some, Mike.

The software uses the original windows language packs which are downloadable from Microsoft as part of a windows update.

I don't consider customising the user interface with free third party programs as stealing.

I do not advocate piracy, nor cracks, or indeed any other form of theft.

If you consider this particular User Interface modification, theft, then a large percentage of the registry changes and other tutorials and instructions here must also be considered theft, because they allow you to do things that the system alone will not allow.

As for REP, I don't give a sh... about it.

Recently, Dell was kind enough to ship (free of charge) a Spanish copy of Win 7 Home Premium to a user who purchased a laptop with the English language installed.

No special codes or secret language was required when I made the request on behalf of the user. I was especially astonished that Dell did not even request a nominal shipping fee.

Mike, language packs are a feature included in Ultimate and Enterprise. One of the reasons why you pay more. Using them in any other edition is against EULA. Even Vistalizator admits this:
It is possible to run a MUI language pack on editions other than Ultimate or Enterprise, but the system refuses to install it and does nothing at all.

To override this limitation to one MUI language, Vistalizator was created.
What is piracy if this is not? Microsoft has a very clear policy: language packs are available as optional updates for those running Ultimate or Enterprise. Not for any other edition. Vistalizator uses a crack to bypass this restriction.

By recommending it, you recommend piracy to get what OP needs.

It's really so simple.

It is indeed quite simple, I deleted the post, and this board just lost a contributor.

I do not take kindly to being accused of advocating or indulging in piracy or theft.

If the sotware was illegal Microsoft would have jumped on it long ago. Or they could restrict access to their language packs, they do not. Obviously they do not consider it illegal to use them.

Whatever, I have no time for nonsense like this.

I'm sorry you feel I was not entitled to voice my opinion, especially sorry if my opinion is for you a reason to quit SF. I do not take my words back, I really meant every word: any use of cracks to get software or even a feature against the EULA is piracy. I'm a tight a** regarding this subject, I know it, but I see no reason to change my attitude.

Windows 7 Ultimate offers language packs as an additional feature. You pay a bit more, you get a bit more.

You did not voice an opinion, you made a direct accusation.

There is no way to combat or refute that sort of thing, and it is absolutely pointless discussing it.

I could not care less about your opinions, but I take violent umbrage at accusations of theft and similar.

Whatever, no point in these sort of exchanges.

Here some reading material regarding these language pack cracks:

My Digital Life said:
Windows 7 Validated As Non-Genuine on Unsupported Editions with MUI Language Pack Installed

After using hack to install language packs on non-supported editions of Windows 7, the Windows 7 operating system may be unsuccessful and validated as non-genuine (in other words, pirated or counterfeit) when user is trying to install updates on Windows Update or download files from the Microsoft Download Center. Genuine Windows validation also fails and returns negative status when user validates on Genuine Microsoft Software site.
...
...
It appears that Windows Activation Technologies (WAT) starts to taking into account feature sets that available on specific edition of Windows 7 operating system when determining the genuine status. In this case, the non-genuine status is returned when Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packs that provide additional display languages in the operating system are installed on Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium or Professional edition, all of which is Windows 7 editions that does not support installation of MUI language packs.

Darin Smith on social.microsoft.com:
Hi Midas,

I am researching your Diagnostic with my Devs. I should be able to provide more information later, but for now, if you think the Vistalizator.exe could be to blame, you may want to try uninstalling it to see if the Non-genuine error goes away.

Thank you,

Re: Vistalizator - MUI changing for Win Vista Home or Business
This seems to be most latest thread about vistalizator, so let me reopen it.

Recently microsoft published update that prevents this from being installed. After installing other MUI, legal notice pops up saying windows is not Legit anymore.

Any work around? I havent really found any info about it yet...

Just one more thing to add to OP: Please read those articles and threads I linked to in the post above. Using the hack Mike told you, you most probably lose the validation of your Windows 7, making it "non-genuine".

With a little research on the Internet you can easily find out that the solution offered is illegal, and only legal option is to upgrade to Ultimate, or check if that legal trick Whs told works for you.

You just don't know when to give it a rest do you?

Had you "voiced an opinion", and pointed out that the software is possibly illegal, then I would simply have deleted the post. But like many other self-styled internet policemen, you run off at half cock, accusing and denigrating people. I was not aware that this software might be considered illegal, or that it might damage a genuine windows copy.

Unlike you, and many others, I post under my own name, and in good faith. There are very many people in the industry who know me, and I simply can not afford to even be accused of malpractice in any form.

I would thank you to desist from any further references to "hacks" and similar rubbish in connection with my name.

Mike, for the first Kari is the name my parents gave me, so it really is my real name:

Passport.png

;)

Secondly, my tone was precisely because I've learned to know you as a very decent member and could not believe you provided this kind of link to OP; I was confused as to why on earth you provide a link to an illegal hack which most probably causes OP to get a non-genuine Windows message.

I couldn't even think you had not checked the validity of your tip.

I am not an Internet police. I am against piracy, and against giving members non-valid information which can cause more serious issues than the original issue ever was.

Hi Kari and Mike, as one of the oldest members (in age) of this forum I take the liberty to ask you to stop the war of words. I do not want to be judge in the dispute, but I think it is not a reason to fall out with each other. Enough words have been said and it would be nice if we could get back "on topic". Thanks, Wolfgang

You don't know me at all, and quite apart from that, anybody can make a mistake. One of the major problems with this and similar forums is that people like you turn them into minefields. This stops even sensible and knowledgeable people posting, because they know they will eventually fall afoul of somebody like you.

You might know everything, but I don't.

I did not check the "validity" of that "tip" because I did not even begin to suspect that it might be illegal. I have no need of such "tips", as all my various PERSONAL Windows copies ( thirty four at the last count) are legal and fully paid for. Over the years I have installed thousands of systems, in hundreds of variations, all legal, but I STILL don't know everything, and I never will.

Congratulations that you do know everything, I am sure it will increase your "rep". Maybe you can also turn water into wine? I am sure you will be able to if you work at it.

You would do well to remember that it is not always what one writes that causes problems, but how one writes it. But of course you knew that as well I suppose? Unfortunate that you did not apply it.

As I already wrote, I have no interest whatsoever in wasting my time on such nonsense. The software is possibly illegal, post deleted. That's all.

If you want to continue such discussions then you will have to find some idiot who is prepared to do it.

I wont answer you again, regardless of what you write, and I wont post to this board again either, because I don't like to be treated in such a fashion.

Doubtless omniscience is a terrible burden.

Goodbye....

Not your fault.

In view of your post I felt obliged to reply once again.

As a result of the various articles about that software that I have in the meantime read and researched, I would not advise you to use it. It will invalidate your Windows copy. I did not know this when I posted the tip, which was actually given to me by somebody else. I have not used it myself because I don't need it. ( I mainly run Win 7 Ultimate on my personal machines). There are possibly other ways to get what you want legally, and doubtless somebody else will advise you on that.

My apologies if I misled you, it was not deliberate.

Mike,

No point in leaving the forum over a disagreement with one user. The 'Ignore' function is available for exactly this reason. A few clicks and your problem is solved.
