The last few days, when i went to download MSE defs, there's a blue header at the top of the page which I don't understand. Will this affect WIndows 7 or how I download MSE updates?

The 'AAD' it refers to is 'Azure Active Directory'. The changes apparently are only relevant to business customers whose workforce sign in to an Azure account. There's an FAQ here that may help understand what it's all about.

As for downloading MSE defs, you don't have to sign in to anything to get them so it's not relevant to you.

Out of interest, why do you download the defs? I just let my MSE check for updates, or let Windows Update do it for me.

I like to manually download, but thank you for the resassurance.

If I haven't updated MSE for awhile, I often find that the app-based update fails, saying connection was lost. So I download the defs manually, which always works. I keep offline on Windows 7 most of the time, so when I update it;s usually been awhile. May have something to do with my slow internet.

I don't have any problem with Microsoft Security Essentials 4.10.209.0 in Windows 7 automatically installing definition updates.

But I do with Windows Defender 4.10.209.0 in Windows 8.1, so it necessitates manually installing the definition updates.

They're both the same antivirus app and use the same definition files, so I'm curious why it does this.

But as long as I can keep both updated, it's no big deal.
