Do I need the dupe data files in Windows.old?

Nearly 1/3 of my C: drive is taken up by windows.old.

(I'm puzzled that I even have this, since my OS (Win 7 x64 Pro) was a clean install on a brand-new drive)

I note that many of the files in this folder are data files that duplicate those on my data drives. Can I simply delete these?

For that matter, do I need this folder at all?

If you don't need to copy any files from the previous installation, then it's safe to delete the Windows.old folder.
