Do preferences, templates etc. remain when upgrading from 2007 to 2010

I intend shortly to remove Office 2007 (H&S) and replace it with the equivalent Office 2010. (2007 has a "home to go to")

I will be doing this through the normal "remove programs" in Control Panel. The computer OS is Win7 Ultimate.

What can I do to ensure that, for example, custom dictionaries and templates remain in place to use with the newer version?

I'm not sure, but it just occurred to me that if you try to do an upgrade instead of uninstalling Office 2007 first, then you might not lose anything like that. So, don't uninstall Office 2007.

OK - that could be the way to do it. But before I do, the 2007 version is Home and Student; the 2010 version is Home and Business. Also, I imagine it's worth installing the 64-bit version of 2010, while the 2007 is 32-bit. Does that influence the "strategy"?

Oh, upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit Office isn't possible. So, you'll have to uninstall 2007 first anyway. I don't know if there's a way to keep everything that you want to keep.

Thank you all for your help with this. Since posting, I've come across the following very helpful link:

Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office - Word - Office.com

that strongly advises installing the 32-bit version unless you need very large spreadsheets (which I don't!).

So I think the only question that needs to be asked now is whether I install the 2010 Home and Business over the top of 2007 Home and Student, or should I uninstall the latter first (bearing in mind that I want to re-install 2007 on another computer). I'm guessing that proofing tools, templates etc. for the 32-bit version will stay where they were - and I can replace them from a backup anyway.
