lol? I swear this thread isn't a conspiracy to target all the major dial-up companies (AOL, NetZero, Juno, etc) and 'play' with their lines to make it so dial-up no longer exists and everyones forced to provide a faster form of internet to rural parts of the US.

Question, as I am not familiar with DSL, but isn't it used over a standard phone line? Why hasn't dial-up already been replaced.

Lol I'm only kidding around, personally I'm surprised there are still area's with just dial-up even with all this technology, all the companies are focusing on bringing faster speeds to people who already have their service, but not so much when it comes to expanding the coverage area.

DSL and ADSL are as you say transmitted over normal phone lines, however they are highly dependent on the quality of the actual line. with older lines the drop off can mean that at any distance of more than a mile or so the signal is so degraded to be useless.

To fix this of course the providers have to do that which they dislike most - spend money

With DSL over pots (plain old tel service) you have to be within 15000' of a telco switch or substn. Usually the telco wire lines dont carry enough signal for it over that distance. So if you're 20 miles from telco equiptment you're hating dial up

I hate dial-up no matter what. Thats why I'm happy, that for now, the internet signal from my neighbor likes me.
