Just curious to see if anyone truly HATES dial-up like myself (being stuck on a 26.4kbps dial-up connection for a few).

Please post your reasons for hating/liking it. :)

-

My reason for hating it is simple, ITS SLOW!

I got my 2 way cable modem back in 1998 I believe. It's been almost 10 years since I have used dial-up. My goodness time goes by quick.

I hated the noise it made.

I envy you and your 'cable modem' you speak of. Yes the noise is annoying but luckily most phone modems today don't make the noise, or have the option to turn it off. :)

I couldn't imagine life without a broadband connection at this point. Seriously, if I couldn't get broadband in a particular location, I wouldn't buy a house there.

A friend of mine built his own house nearby where we used to work. He didn't have cable TV coming out there, couldn't get DSL, had all kinds of problems with ISDN and ultimately he got a business class T1 for the low, low price of $400 per month with a 2 year contract. And he willfully paid it because his alternative was dial-up. Fortunately, by time his contract expired there were wireless options available for him for a fraction of the cost and that is what he is on now.

I'd likely give up HDTV, indoor plumbing and air conditioning before I went back to a non broadband connection.

I'm looking to move in the next few years and no matter how good the house is, I will not move anywhere that hasn't got at least 50meg cable.

50meg cable minimum: LOL. I've been on 1.5mbps, 3.0mbps, 6.0mbps, 8.0mbps and now 15mbps...and honesty the difference between all of them really hasn't been that dramatic. I rarely do any very large downloads...just an occasional Linux distro every now and then, or a Windows release candidate when they are provided for free. I'd have to be on a high-speed connection...but I don't think I would demand it be more than about 5-6Mbps.

The fastest Comcast in my area is 16mbps...but that's with that SpeedBooster crap. I personally despise Comcast and am fortunate enough to have a smaller cable company option at my house. I use Wide Open West. While they don't really save me any money over Comcast and have fewer services, their Internet for me is rock solid steady and I always get what I pay for. I got 15/1 service and I just checked and over wireless I got:

Download Speed: 15858 kbps (1982.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1100 kbps (137.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Of course Comcast would get my business if I had no other choice :)

I didn't know they still made modems.

Maybe I'm spoiled, I've had a partial T1 for well over 12 years.

Lol, well its our only hi-speed option here because Comcast likes to play games (monopoly). Works like this;

Fairpoint (formerly Verizon) and Metrocast doesn't service Comcast Areas, in return Comcast doesn't service there areas (they overlap each other a bit though).

The time I was on dial-up (in a city on top of it all), I hated it so much. All I wanted to do is to download music but ONE 4MB music could take up to 20min to complete during that time we couldn't use the phone.

But, you gotta congrats me into getting over 4GB of music that way.

Now that I know the world of High-Speed Internet, I don't wanna look back.
