Dodgy audio (stalling...)

Hi there guys, my sound just comes from an intergrated chip, I couldn't remember what it was off by hand.

I went into Vista (I'm dual-booting) and grabbed the drivers I needed and placed them in the /drivers folder in Win7... it didn't like that. I managed to source what I think are the right drivers from the VIA website. They installed fine...

However, when I turn the PC on, the sound is slightly muffeled. I tried playing MP3's and they play absolutely perfectly! Went into audio in control panel and tested some sounds but they were strangely still muffleled. That, I could live with.

However my main problem is that after around 20 mins of the OS being on the sound stops working completely, even in WMP it won't seem to actually attempt to play at all. Any ideas?

Hello Kayzee, and welcome to Windows 7 Forums.

For now, it may be better to only use the default audio drivers Windows 7 installs until there are some audio drivers for Windows 7 to try out. So far the default ones are working fine for me. Fingers crossed.

Hi unfortunately the standard drivers 7 installed for me didn't work at all... appeared with a red 'x' next to the speaker in the task bar.

Now I installed the other drivers a tick has appeared (after clicking on the speaker) but still nothing. I wonder if try to install drivers off my Vista disc might be worth a try?

You might try using the driver installation file that you used for Vista, but try using Compatibility Mode with Vista selected on the installation file to see if it helps.

The odd thing I've found is that the Control Panel for my sound card is the XP version and not the Vista version. Unsurprisingly, not all the features work either. ie DTS is not upmixing to 5.1 etc

My start up sound is crackly too. Every thing else is working though

Hi Shawn, yes I am. The driver is actually a XP/Vista multi driver. But seeing as 7 is more related to Vista than XP, that's why I find it rather odd

Odd indeed. Did you already try using Compatibility Mode with Vista mode selected on the installation file to see if it helps?

No, it shouldn't for a audio driver with compatibility mode. It will either work or not properly.

It can do great harm if an old legacy application does something Windows 7 doesn't support

Have you tried Turning off "All Sound Effects" under speaker properties and changing the default format either lower or higher?

Where abouts it that mate? Unfortunately XP compatibility mode didnt help either. Just to show a screendump that everything appears to be installed okay...

No I didn't. For some reason I kind of prefer the XP panel....

I'll try it when I run out of other things to play with and get a little bored

Found three sound cards to try in my house!

First one was some old black unbranded board, obviously faulty as conflicted with any other PCI card in, including my graphics card, so that was obviously a no no.

Second was an Xwave 4000, very old, (says to install 95/98 drivers!) so that didn't work, and try as I might, couldn't find any Vista drivers on the net.

Third was a Sound Blaster, PC wouldn't even recognise it was plugged in :huh: which is a shame as it's not that old iirc.

I think I might have to give up, and get a card which is definitely compatible with Win7. What card would you recommened which perfect for Win7 for someone on a budget!?

I had these same problems when I did an upgrade from Vista and the old vista drivers were still there, (crackling and such). So what I did was reinstalled doing clean install and everything seemed to work fine. So I don't know what to say but it is a pre-beta so I am sure this will be fixed. Vista had sounds issues on my computer last time until SP1, so this is definitely better.

Also, green check mark only means that it your default sound device.

He is right, sometimes you can find drivers online if you have the skills you can modify the driver to make it work in 7.

Since this is a fresh installation (3rd time. New HDD. I must like it ) I tried installing the audio drivers with Vista Compatibility Mode and it still gives me the XP control panel :huh:

With the Xwave 4000 did you try the XP drivers in Compatibility Mode? It's a long shot, but may be worth it:

Even though I've had a few oddities with the drivers in 7, I really don't have any problems. It's more the Control panel side of things. (It will undoubtedly be rectified in time) The sound card in My System Specs was pretty cheap and is a great card for the price.

I have also noticed that when you go to NVIDIA driver website, it shows as XP in there OS line. When you visit the site from Vista, you will see Vista in the line as it should.
