Dodgy W7 Updates

I received this update today, anyone have any ideas as to what it is? I've googled the name and not a lot of info is about.
Some peeps are even saying it's a virus (unlikely, i hope!)

There is a lot of stuff online about it - but basically it seems as if it is the actual driver from the Sonix corporation for quite a few webcams they sold to OEMs, notable HP:

Thanks johngalt, that's exactly the same search as i did, nearly every result is a repeat and says this on the site;

"Whatever it is - don't get it from Microsoft.
If you need an update for any hardware on your computer - visit the hardware
manufacturer's web page and get it directly from them. Microsoft did not
create nor do they directly support the device in question - why would you
depend on them for said support? "

Do you think it's safe to install it? I do have a HP after all

Lol - that bike *is* a beast. One day, when I own the GT-R, I hope to find you and put 'em side by side - just to humble myself that the GT-R is not the world's fastest machine....

The one I linked to said that the person who had it had the camera driver changed to whatever YooShot blah blah - if your camera and software is working fine, I think you can ignore it - however, since it is being provided by M$, manually make a system restore point and try it out - after all that driver they want you to install is made for W7....

I disagree with the whole "If it is from M$ ignore it - b/c most of those posts were for an established OS< Vista, or XP, and it was true that the manufacturer usually had more up to date (and more featured) drivers. In this case, though, with W7 being so new, I'd check Sonix's site to see what they say - and if there is not driver update (or not driver update from HP from the last 2 months) do as I outlined above.

None of them do - because most people don't understand that this is not a driver developed by M$ - it is developed by the OEM, and thus if they put a new driver out on all OSs there must be a reason (now that reason could be a frakked up M$ employee who put it out on all OSs when it was only needed for some OSs, or a frakked up employee at the OEM who submitted it for all OSs when it was supposed to be only for particular OSs, but still...).

I may be missing something here but isn't the idea of Microsoft Update to keep you updated?

If a hardware vendor releases a new driver they may well hand it to Microsoft to release as an update (see Ralink - Wireless adapter, in pic)

That turned up only yesterday and now my hardware drivers (to most extent) are up to date. There is going to be a lot of drivers appear on WU IMO as more hardware vendors increase their support for Windows 7 achitecture.

My thoughts exactly - but we're also human - incorrect / unfinished / broken drivers *can* get released. making a System Restore point every time you see a W driver install about to start is a good thing....

But, in general, I have been letting WU update whenever it wants to.

I let it now, as Intel have released Windows 7 supported drivers

In the past i've either had to let it notify me of updates before installing or manually hide an update. What a pain in the a$$ that is

Lol I'm afraid my friend, i'd blow you into last week. I've been tinkering with her...0-100 km/h = 2.9 seconds, top speed = 302.6 km/h. It'd still be a good race though, you'd make up ground in the bends

Back on track...i took the plunge and installed the driver and all seems good. I frequently use Skype and the driver has made a positive difference to the video transmission.

it says it will be available in August 2009 for $170. its a high res webcam. so MS folks are pushing the driver now i guess.
