Hello and thanks for your help in advance..

I have a brand new Acer Aspire 5745 running windows 7 home premium...(build unknown). Intel core I5-450m. Ive had this laptop for only 2 days and since i got it it will not complete the shutdown process. Freezing on the "windows is shutting down screen". Upon restart is gives me the windows did not shut down properly and the start windows normally option.

What can be the issue?

Thanks Steve

Sounds like a program is getting hung up and not closing properly. Before shutting down, right click the taskbar and choose Start Task Manager.

If you are comfortable with checking the processes tab, look in there for anything running under your username (not system), and close it if it is not needed.

After doing that, click your start button and type msconfig. Click the startup tab, and here do the same thing. Uncheck anything you don't need running.

Restart your computer.

If it hangs again, click the Start Windows Normally option, and try restarting one more time once windows loads.

thanks ill try it...also heres a quick addition...it also hung when windows update took over the system to do its install and failed to shut down when finished installing than too. Also when i put the pc to sleep, it did, but upon restart it gave me the "windows did not shut down..." jargon too.

Naturally, if windows is installing updates its going to take longer to shut down. Did you happen to press and hold the power button instead of letting it shut itself off?

THis can be cause by several issues but it seems like 50% of the time it's the audio driver that hangs on unload. You can try disabling the audio device in the device manager and see if that clears it up.

If it does, finding a new driver for the audio chip might help.

It is time consuming, but anytime I've encountered this, I've made a list of running apps, at the time I'm ready to shut down. I'll kill one in task manager and then try to reboot. Assuming it hangs, I'll cross off the one I killed, and try another one, one at a time, until I find out the offender. It is usually an app tied to hardware, such as a helper app for audio, etc.

You can try creating a desktop shortcut with the path:

shutdown -s -f

Double click on the shortcut to shut down.

Hello evreyone;

Much thanks to all for your input...

Heres the latest...I did as Kirsch suggested and first closed all running programs, next went into task mgr and shut down a few additional processes...(there were over 60 running under my user name) next opened msconfig and unchecked almost all the startup programs....than the shut down went just fine.

So next by process of elimination i re-enabled a few things at a time, shutting down after each to test, and no problems occurred. To cut to the chase...after re-enabling everything i previously stopped. and even starting my normal applications, browser and yahoo messenger, and split cam, the problem appears to have corrected itself...so im back with everything working (all my programs) as well as all processes running under normal startup procedure and it seems to be fine now...

Im happy to have the issue resolved, but still im the kind uf guy that would like to know why and how it corrected itself. So if u have any explanations i appreciate the opportunity to learn.

Its weird how pc's can just magically fix their self after being called out. hahahahah

Ill let u know if there is any issues when sleeping or restarting as the shut down process seems to be ok now..

Thanks to all Steve
