Does Windows 7 have AHCI drivers at install

I have found on 4 different boards if I install in AHCI mode, Windows 7 seems to "find" the drivers for running in AHCI/RAID mode at install. If I install in IDE mode, it does not and I have no option to switch to AHCI/RAID if needed. In the past you had to press F6 (or whatever) and install them from a floppy. I think this is no longer the case with Windows 7. Can anyone confirm this. I don't even have a floppy and never will. I will install in AHCI so I have the choice in the future. Is there any down side to doing this and am I right?

Also - I know there is a registry "hack" you can use to boot into AHCI after installing in IDE but why does everyone not install in AHCI so they have the choice? Am I way off here? Are you planning to install in AHCI to have this benefit?

What you are asking in found in the BIOS settings. Read the manual supplied as to how they (manufacture) wants things done.
my MOBO allows (F6) also (F11) and (F12) - (F2) is master access to Bios.

I don't even have a floppy and never will.

then burn to a CD or DVD or USB. your choice. but some manufactures demand that you install there xxxxxx via floppy disc.

I have gone over and over this. I can run RAID and AHCI with no drivers installed during installation (if I'm in AHCI) even though my mobo manual says I can't. I think they are covering themselves for XP users. I am just curious if anyone else has noticed this and if there is a down side to doing it. It must be grabbing generic MS drivers or something. I can't find any info on this anywhere.

I am familiar with the BIOS. I have the option to run in IDE or AHCI or RAID (3 options)

I will just install in AHCI then start trying to find info. I know it's a "way out there" question. I was just hoping someone may see this and know what the heck is going on.

If you have AHCI or Raid enabled in the bios - W7 and Vista will automatically install the intel driver for it, but the problem occurs if you dont also install the intel matrix storage manager, as the the driver doesnt function properly if you dont, and you can get problems with any storage device if you dont.
You will find it at the intel site - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
Select chipsets - chipset software - intel(R) matrix storage manager - Select Operating System - select W7RC1 (64bit OR 32 bit) - select drivers - select intel(R) matrix storage manager 8.9.0.1023 - download and install.
(make sure you don't download the floppy configuration utility by mistake) - it will show up if you select utilities.

Microsoft have a driver you can install if you dont have AHCI enabled when you install the OS (its not a hack) and it requires you to alter the registry before you change from IDE to AHCI in the bios - it doesnt require the Intel Matrix Storage Software to function correctly.
Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"

I just installed in AHCI (my new copy of Win7 Pro) and installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager and the latest Intel and Gigabyte drivers for my 3 controllers on my board. I am able to use IDE, AHCI, or RAID. This is definitely the way to go. Whatever you do, if you plan to use AHCI or RAID one day.....don't install in IDE. It will be a pain in you A**.
