Don't Like Windows 7

Microsoft will allow you to use a License purchased for the current version of Windows to be used to run older versions, as long as the newer version is removed from your machine. You can't use an older license for a newer version, but you can go backwards. So if you have a friend with Vista, you can use his disk to load the OS, but hold on to your 7 license to make it legal.

We are all kind of frustated with the dumming down of Windows that occurred in the XP to Vista to Win 7 process. A lot of the user functionality and control has been removed and replaced with automated processs to make it more similar to a Mac. Unfortunately Microsoft does not realize that most Mac users are nearly computer illerterate, and seldom use more than one or two programs. And we all are driven crazy by the random rearrangement of menu items and UI layout just to make it look different from XP. If it looked too similar to XP people would think that they are not getting their money's worth. So they felt obligated to scramble the menus to make it look like they did a lot of work on the XP kernel. But a new coat of paint is still just a new coat of paint.

But, that said, Win 7 is far better than Vista. If you dont like 7 go back to XP. Other than looking prettier, 7 does not offer any real functionality that XP didn't already have. And, until the first 7 service pack comes out, Xp is still going to be more stable. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face by going back to Vista.

You obviously don't know how to use it then because there are a ton of things that make it far more functional than xp. Maybe if you spent a bit of time getting to know it.

It's like when you get a new girlfriend you got to be patient and find out what she likes. We all have a soft spot for our x girlfriends but really they are an X for a reason. Xp is my ex because she has aged quite considerably, has no legs in her any more and is really dull to look at.

Windows 7 on the other hand is fresh and vibrant and has many tricks up her sleeve that other os's can only dream of.

Have a nice day.......

Hydrology,

Okay you have stated some pretty far out problems within Win 7, now lets see you back them up. In other words lets see what you have to demonstrate your vast knowledge of the things that are totally wrong within Win 7.

As a Mac user (see my specs) I find your lack of knowledge in both OS's lacking. Both have there points and counter points, and what you need to do if you are going to make a blank statement as you have, is outline to us those differences.

So please step up to the plate, and give us the reasons that warrant your reasoning.

Lee, you need to go back and read my post. I have not mentioned any problems, only my dislike for Microsoft focusing on image rather than substance in this OS update. I have been using 7 since the first beta was released and although its a nice OS it does not provide any more functionality or efficiency than XP for the work that we do.

We do 2-, and 3-dimensional fluid flow modeling for surface and groundwater flow systems. We develop a lot of our own CFD software for PC's as well as Mac's, specializing in analysis as well as flow visualization. We have been using PC's and Mac's for analysis and for developing software; on PC's for 25 years and on Mac's for over 15 years. So I think that we might be a little familiar with both systems.

Although 7 was very stable when we first started to use it, as we slowly started loading a lot of the software that we use, we have noticed Numerous bugs that have bee poping up. We do use a lot of software and that will tax any OS. The problems range from simple program crashes to very serious problems like the $7,000 ARCVIEW package from ESRI which will install and run just fine, but the numerical results are occasionally incorrect. The same program running on XP runs correctly. But, I digress. I don't really have too many problems with the bugs in 7, because its a new OS and bugs are to be expected. My problem is with the fact that there is nothing fundamentally new in 7 for doing computing work. 7 is pretty and I actually like using it, but when its balls to the wall to get the work done and a product out, I use my XP machine because there is nothing in 7 that will increase our productivity or efficiency. But I do admit, its improved Microsoft's bottom line.

it is the responsibility of the software markers to update their software, this isn't an issue with windows, it's individual programs that don't behave correctly in the new environment and should be patched

I agree, and in a year or two, they might have all of those bugs worked out. In the mean time XP works just fine.

The problem is that when I go back to XP I can get my work done just fine. The only thing that I am missing is the pretty UI.

I think that it is the other way around. You meet this beautiful girl and start to go out with her, everything seems wonderful. You think that this is the one and you are in seventh heaven. Then you start to notice little things that bug you, but no matter you can get used to those. Then you realize that she has a little BO, but hey you can get used to that also, its not too bad. Then you notice that she has gas pretty frequently and takes great pleasure in letting big ones go in public. But hey nobody is perfect. Then you find out she lives with 30 cats and drinks bacon fat for breakfast. Things arn't looking so good right now. But you try to be understanding, because she looks so damn good. Then you find out that shes is not compatible with your friends and she wants you to get all new friends that will be compatible with her. Thats when you realize that maybe beauty isnt everything. To make it worth while to stop dating your other girlfriend there has to be some substance as well.

Well I have been dating Win 7 for 4 months now, 7 or so months if you count the beta, and I am not seeing that it does anything new under the pretty skin, just new Ways to do the same thing that XP did. And for the most part, the new ways aren't any more efficient than the old ways. But, I am a sucker for new technology just like I am a sucker for a pretty girl, so Microsoft gets my money in the end anyway. And thats the REAL purpose of this new OS.

Oh, c'mon guys, every change is dificult somehow, but we need to adapt to it, more or less...right? We can't live forever ever with XP:D It's better to get used on Win7 now then latter;) Now, I don't now about all that profesional applications and how they work under Win7, but for average user as myself...I love it:D

I agree with some of what you're saying, but if you're looking for a fundamentally new way of computing, you're gonna have to wait until Windows 57 or whatever the hell they'll call it when your kids or grandchildren are using it. Is your software issue necessarily a problem with 7, or a problem with how it works with the 7 architecture? Not saying that in a pompous way. Just saying that the changes from XP to 7 are not all insignificant or cosmetic. I don't know anything about fluid dynamics software. But if people are having problems with Grand Theft Auto with 7, think about the demands from your kind of software, which can freak out a supercomputer.

Win7 sucks: **** Microsoft.
MS took out too many useful links:
1: Windows explorer Toolbar Icons;
Go Back; Go Forward; Refesh; ESPECIALLY SEARCH (Search by Fiile Name; Search by WHATS IN A FILE; Option towards a specific directory in quesiton Advanced Search Options to be enabled to search everything including Compressed files and System files.... I miss this optiion so much....Why the **** did they change it?
I know where I put things; most of the time.. but how to search for them in Win7 OPTIONLESS...
THIS SUCKS....

They should have left Windows Explorer ALONE.....ALONE... ALONE.... ALONE..... WHAT DON'T These people at MS understand.

I LIKE WINDOWS EXPLORER the way it was...PERIOD.... Place icons on the toolbar that you need... Search for what your looking for TEXT OR FILE? LEAVE WINDOWS EXPLORER xp THE WAY IT WAS.... With toolbar icons to user preference.

I know pretty much where I put things... But how to search when no options are presented to the user...JUST A SIMPLE SEARCH BOX..... This sucks, LEAVE THINGS ALONE.

2. I don't like the control panel either. Too many useless icons, for things that use too be just a right-click away or a simple directory manuver away.

3. The Toolbars in Windows 7 inclucing the Taskbar have become TOO BIG... You/MS have taken away so much useful space for VIEWING TEXT, PICTURES ETC; because of widened (highten toolbars).

4. I'm not finished yet..................................

If mosgt of what I sy is there? Then why is not just a right-click away (or a toolbar option)?

Buy Directory Opus and Replece Windows Explorer with it for Windows 8... If you DON'T I Willl Not invest into Windows 8.... Your Explorer for Windows 7 Sucks... I like Window XP Windows Explorer and it ICONS THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY FROM ME... I am not stupid and I like Windows XP Windows Explorer and its options.
Well; if these options are there; it's not just a right-click away or a search through the menu options; because I have not found it yet... Nor do I want to search for something that should be right there at the instance I'm in and need OR help for... PERIOD....

I showed you where the options are. Do they not show up there when you open Windows Explorer?
