So how do I tell Windows update to stop offering it to me?

In Win XP, I could uncheck and would be asked if I wanted it to stop offering -- but that does not seem to work in Win 7.

Look in the list of offered updates
right-click on the entry there, select 'Hide' - this will prevent it being installed, at least until there's a new version of the update released
