Downloaded MS update, now saying I'm not genuine (0xC004F063)

I maybe 3 weeks ago got an SSD and formatted it, went through the trouble of downloading everything etc. Windows at first didn't have a problem with my key. Now it does.

I read in another thread in this forum that with OEM versions (I have one), the product key one finds with a key finder (my old hard drive is still connected), is just a generic one, and that something in the BIOS should handle the activation.

There was a set of commands including "net stop sppsvc" "rename tokens.dat (...)", that was supposed to help solve it. But that didn't work for me, so now I'm asking myself.

I was worried about a virus, found one with quick scan (must have downloaded a bad torrent or something), but the problem still persists. On a side note, how important do you guys think having an active firewall is? I consider myself relatively security conscious, several passwords, no weird pornsites, gmail etc.

You have reformatted, and then reinstalled using the manufacturer's OEM_SLP Product Key - this Key ONLY works when used together with the manufacturer's Recovery media.



You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.


You may need to activate by phone.

What do you mean inside the battery compartment? You mean where the PSU is located? There is a Windows 7 Sticker on the front but it's just the logo and name.

Would I call Windows or Packard-Bell when activating by phone?

I have a mini-Tower stuff is pretty compact, before I start taking it all apart it'd be nice to know if there is a chance the sticker could be underneath some hardware.

On mini-towers it should be on the outside - often at the back.

The HackTool/KeyGen is fairly generic - and refers to hackers' tools to 'activate' or crack Keyed licenses in general.

Okay just to clear things up - and I feel for you guys because your responses show you must be dealing with morons most of the time - long before I posted this thread I checked all over my case for a COA sticker. The idea that I would need a picture of it to spot it is rather amusing as well.

So I guess from your responses, this has after all nothing to do with the BIOS or anything like was mentioned in this thread (I'm referring to it because it had the same error code). So I'll just have to call Packard Bell. Thanks.

Did the PC from Packard Bell originally have Win 8, and Win 7 is a "downgrade option" ?
My understanding is PC's with Win 8.x do not have a COA sticker.

The BIOS is dated May 2011 - so it can't be a Win8 machine
