It sounds as if it should be replaced before it fails permanently.

Check what make HDD is on your Dell Inspiron and run the DOS version of the manufacturer's diagnostics.( DELL mostly uses Seagate drives which begin with ST........ In that case it will be SeaTools for DOS)

Having said that, if your DELL lappie is still under warranty (or even otherwise) it would be better to talk to DELL Technical Support and find out what their take on this issue is. If any service is chargeable, then you may think of going on your own.

BTW, I hope that you have made the recovery disks for your system. If not it is time you do it or ask for the free DELL OS media on the plea that your HDD is dead and you need to replace it. (Even out of warranty DELL may supply the disc free. That will be a pure Windows media without any DELL load that will help you do a clean install that will auto activate on installation. Take a chance.:) ) https://www.dell.com/support/diagnostics/us/en/19/nondiagnostichome

Dell usually has their own diagnostic test which they will believe quicker than most any other test. Boot into the Dell Diagnostics and run that test. Otherwise, Dell will have you do it before they replace the drive. But, I would still run the manufacturer's diagnostic test also.
