Hi and thanks in advance for your time.

Getting blue screen problems on installing XP to my blank partition. I'm guessing I have the wrong SATA and Controller drivers. I've slipstreamed several types into my XP CD with no luck. I'll try changing the bios settings next, but does anyone have or can you even just tell me that if Dell/Intel don't make a 32-bit XP version drivers for my disk and disk controller that I'm out of luck? Any other ideas what I'm doing wrong?

My current hardware and drivers:
Hard Drive:
Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKX-75U6A SCSI Disk drive
Current Win 7 Driver: 6.1.7600.16385

Controller:
Intel 8 Series/C220 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller
Current Win 7 Driver: 12.7.3.1001

It's the SATA controller from the PC chipset, needs to be XP for your bit version, slipstreamed exactly like this: SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD. Use the XP CD w/SP3 for your exact version and retail/OEM sku which must match in XP.

Otherwise you can virtualize XP easier inside Win7 using XP Mode in Ultimate/Pro, free Virtual Box, Virtual Player or VMWare.

Thanks for your quick reply. Sounds like the answer to my question is I am out of luck if Dell/Intel don't make 32-bit XP drivers for the disk controller.

For the other part of my question, Can anyone tell me where to find the right drivers? I've slipstreamed several drivers into my installation (32 & 64), and have now gone through several blank CDs.

I did go into the BIOS and change the config to IDE and it's now installing, but we'd like to have it working as a clean dual boot 7 or XP and not have to change the BIOS to boot to the other operating sys.

Also, we've tried all things virtual and run into brick walls. Won't work in our situation.

I'm also have a heck of a time finding all my drivers that will work on XP 32 bit. Dell has everything for windows 7 64-bit only. My network and ethernet controllers are first on my list. Any help or enlightenment is appreciated.

I'll try that, thanks.

In the mean time, it's not looking to good as far as hardware drivers. All dell & intel offer are 7+ 64-bit versions. I can't even install some because my XP is SP1, and i can't upgrade because the old software (industrial SCADA) we're trying to save is incompatible with SP2.

Can anyone tell me what my options are? Are there are generic or other manufacturer's drivers out there for XP 32-bit that I could try?

I would not even attempt this without SP3. I thought I already made that clear. Install with SP3 and then try the software.

Thanks for your input Greg. Tried SP3 but obviously can't test our software because we don't have any drivers.

Any advise about finding the XP/32-bit version of my drivers is appreciated, particularly the chipset and network controllers.

Thanks

Sorry,
It says (I'm reading this from the Win 7 Dev Mgr):
Network Adapters:
Dell Wireless 1705 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) for the Wifi
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (got it already I think. Haven't tested and not sure if this is the network controller or just ethernet)
Some bluetooth stuff that we won't need
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

Universal Serial Bus Controllers:
Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
Intel USB 3.0 Root Hub
Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller

What drivers are on the Dell Support Downloads webpage for your tag number?

Again no Dell model number provided. Do you see it is blank in your specs? Why? This is where to start!

If no XP then google device make/model for XP drivers which I did for your SATA controller.

Greg, they don't offer anything but for Win 7 & 8, 64-bit. I'll change my specs now.

Greg, since you seem to be a veteran at all this, do you have any experience getting a parallel HASP licence dongle to work in XP mode/VMware, etc.? The software I have points to the LP3 port and nothing else, and I'm not savy enough to modify the software.

Are there even xp drivers fpr the dongle? If not then neither XP nor Vmware will be able to use it.

Sometimes you can install XP-era drivers in Compatibility Mode.

This essentially tricks the installer and driver into thinking it's being installed to XP.

If you search some drivers are modded to run on unsupported systems, like the SATA one I linked above.

Maybe worth a try to download this ISO which contains lots of XP drivers. Of course check it thoroughly for any infection

Our Moderator Barman58, who is a fount of knowledge, says:

Hasp - Hardware and software protection - It's a device that plugs into a serial or Parallel I/O port - basically a plug without a lead, various pins on the on the device are cross wired

The "protected" software writes signals to the device and reads back the resultant signal.

If the signal read is as expected the software continues, if not it shuts down or goes into some other non usable state - Its an old electro-mechanical licensing system for specialist commercial / industrial software

They were always very flaky if the port was in anyway non-standard, with modern systems, where these ports are replaced with USB, I would doubt if they would be usable except with a specialist add on card (serial or Parallel), and users would need to speak to manufacturer for specs.

For a VM you would need to have a standard physical port that is passed through to the VM without any modification, not sure if timing would also be an issue - would depend on the actual software

Yes the software was designed for up to 32-bit XP. It's working in my XP now (the security dongle, that is).

Where I ran into a problem was getting virtual XP mode to just simply recognize the parallel port, or even a serial port for that matter. I haven't tried VMware yet, does it support parallel ports?
