Hi,This used to work but for some unknown reason, my tv now only displays the background..no icons etc, only in extended mode. I've tried the Win+P, duplicate, but only the tv displays and the computer screen goes into saving mode. Please help!!

welcome :) .
You want to Duplicate the desktop onto the secondary monitor.
Add an extra monitor for a laptop

Because every laptop comes with an integrated screen, you only have to connect one monitor to create a dual screen. That's easy because most laptops have a video port. (Unlike desktop PCs, two video ports are rare on a laptop.) Just plug a monitor into the DVI or VGA port and Windows 7 will automatically detect the monitor. As explained above, you might need an adapter to plug a DVI cable into a VGA port or vice versa.
I plug a monitor into my laptop when I'm at my desk and unplug it when I take my laptop on the go. You don't have to change any settings in Windows when you do this.

The Multiple displays drop-down list appears when Windows detects more than one monitor connected to your PC.

Try using extended mode and move a window to the tv screen by dragging a the window outside your screen to the left or right side. Extended mode is not supposed to have icons.

Indeed he has .
In that case, do you have a dedicated GPU?
If so did you install the software (control panel) for it?
Are you using the integrated GPU/APU?

Thanks for the replies..This was what I did months ago and it worked..
I've connected my Dell PC to Panansonic TV with HDMI Monster cable.
Gone into "Display Settings" - "Multiple Displays" - "Duplicate These Displays"

For some unknown reason, it has switched and the TV won't Duplicate the PC, only Extends
When I go into "Display Settings" - "Multiple Displays" ..."Duplicate these displays" is not in the drop bar..it disappeared!!
Then I tried Win+P and cycle to "Duplicate". The TV then displays the computer screen with icons and all but my computer screen goes blank and into "saving mode"

All software updated and even tried going to systems restore but still can't Duplicate
Help! It's driving me mad

Wait, do you want to duplicate the screen or extend the screen? I think your only choice is for extending since duplicating is not working.

I don't think you can duplicate unless both monitors have exactly the same resolution. If they don't it might explain why duplicate isn't even an option.

Resolution only plays a limiting factor when the monitor is physically unable to display it,
in which case you will be presented with and Out of range OSD.

YoYo155,I'm not sure about the APU and GPU. Mine is a Dell and its the basic with windows 7.
What do you think I should do to get it to Duplicate. It is so frustrating!!!

this is correct, it willl use the smallest resolution of the two monitors, none the less, it will still show.

Interesting, on my PC I only found out I could duplicate when I hitched up two monitors with identical resolution and saw the duplicate option for the first time. I don't want to contradict your experience but do wonder whether it will always show in Windows or whether it depends on the graphics card etc.

Maybe for some reason, the graphics card does not support the tv's resolution.
