DVD Drive Issues after 7 upgrade

Hi everyone. I just installed a Windows 7 Pro upgrade last week with a clean install from XP Pro. After a successful install, I noticed that my second DVD drive (I have two, one is just a reader and the second is a burner) was not being recognized consistantly at start up. The reader comes up every time with no issues, but the burner only shows up about every fifth reboot. Upon start up, the system goes through all of its hardware checks before getting to the initial "Windows Start Up" screen and pauses at the detecting CD-ROM stage. I can always tell when the drive will or will not be recognized based on the length of the pause. This detection stage takes less than a blink of an eye if the drive is recognized, but will sit and pause for 2 minutes or more if the drive can not be located. In the event of no detection, Windows starts up fine, but there is no sign of the DVD burner in the system at all (My computer, device manager, etc.). The buttons do not work on the front of the drive and the light does not come on at all. Both drives are IDE drives and the one drive works fine, so I don't believe it is a driver issue. I have checked and re-checked all of the connections, jumpers, etc. with no luck. Does this sound like the drive is going bad? Seems to me like I am having a power issue more than a system issue. However, I am having a hard time believing that the drive malfunctioning right after my Windows 7 upgrade is a coincidence. Any thoughts??? Thanks in advance!!

I have the same problem and I can't read or write data from my dvd/cd rom and it is not recognized when burning files, it is not listed in the Device Manager.

After following the link you posted, Theog, when troubleshooting i get the message: Windows didn't detect an optical disc drive. It might be disconnected or unplugged. Check the drive connection, or plug the drive in.

But I have a laptop Hp 2495se and went from Vista to WIndows 7 like a month ago...and my optical drive was working perfectly so I don't think it is disconnected or unplugged because I didn't touch the cables inside my laptop.

Please help..:S

I already had tried both of those suggestions and could not come up with anything. The system does not even see the drive. Any other thoughts?

Fill these in System Specs, you can use Speccy if you don't know them, and people will be able to troubleshoot better.

If you have an intel chipset and AHCI enabled in the bios you would need to download and install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager, as it will cause problems if you dont, and it does fix problems with DVD drives.
