DVD Drive Problem Gateway NV58 Laptop

Hello everybody, Im a newbie to windows 7. The other day I installed Windows 7 Enterprise on my NV58 gateway laptop. I did have 64bit windows vista. When I tried installing windows 7 is said it couldn't because it couldn't go to a 32 bit windows 7. My roomate told me to go to custom install and after that it did install. I wasn't haveing any problems at first but then it wouldn't recognize my wired internet connection in my dorm room (vista had trouble also). So, now when I try to put a cd or dvd into my dvd drive, it takes it forever to recognize the cd/dvd. and since then it says that a drive is not even installed. What can I do to fix this? This windows 7 is being a real pain in the butt. Thanks!

Also, I got my laptop on 6-15-09 and I recieved the windows 7 enterprise free from my college website.

I discovred these problems when I tried burning some MP3's onto a blank CD+R. Also I tried burning a .iso file onto a blank DVDR using Imgburn. My imgburn locks up whenever I put a cd/dvd into the drive...and the whole computer basically locks up when a cd/dvd is inserted.

The little disc light on the laptop is constantly on now for some reason. I did restore windows 7 to the day I installed it (3 days ago) and it works fine for a little bit and then the same problems happen with the cd/dvd drive. Thanks!

Try this instead CDBurnerXP: Introduction and Newsdespite the XP tag it works fine in W7 including my 64 Bit Enterprise edition.

Hey after looking at that link, is that a burner program? Im having trouble with my dvd drive recognizing any type of cd/dvd including blank cd/dvd's. It says that a device is not installed. and when I put like a game into the drive it never does anything and the computer freezes. Any ideas?

You need to download and install the latest intel matrix storage manager software/driver because AHCI is enabled in your bios, and what happens during installation of W7 is W7 installs the Intel driver, but for correct functionality you need to install the intel matrix storage manager after installation is complete if you dont it will cause the problem you are having with your DVD DRIVE.

You will find it at the intel site - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
Select chipsets - chipset software - intel(R) matrix storage manager - Select Operating System - select Windows 7 (64bit OR 32 bit) - select drivers - select intel(R) matrix storage manager 8.9.0.1023 - download and install.
(make sure you don't download the floppy configuration utility by mistake) - it will show up if you select utilities.

Set up a restore point firstly to be on the safe side - I've been to your site, and it has an earlier version for vista, but the 8.9.0.1023 is for W7 and is backward compatible, and should install without any problems.

I dloaded something and I think it works now but when I put in a blank dvd the startup manager pop up either takes forever to pop up or it never does. But the comp. is recognizing the blank dvds. Thanks for all the help!

Hi everybody! I have exactly the same problem :
- It sometimes takes forever to recognize a disk;
- It fails everytime I try to burn something... It looks like it's the "finalizing disk" step that fails everytime...

I'm using Win7 64-bit and I've already tried to install Intel Matrix Storage Manager... I had Windows Vista before and I have no memories that I had such problems.

Does anybody know another solution to this problem?

You could have a look here at the WINDOWS 7 suggested fix : note the filter fix is working for some people if the filters are there, but backup the registry first if you try it. Simply export the folder concerned by right clicking it and sending it to the desktop, or you can backup the whole registry - click File/export etc - to return the registry just click the file on the desktop and follow prompts.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

My wife has the exact laptop with the same problem and it ended up being defective and they replaced it with another under warranty.
