DVD rom & ram drives now are labeled as CD drives. I pretty much done every fix listed anywhere and can't revert back. They will not automatically do anything DVD related but I can force them for example to play a dvd if I point to the correct file.

I don't want to format and reinstall, only as a last resort.

Additionally, I plugged other DVD drives in and they say CD drives as well.

filters are now non-existant in the registry.

Tried un-installing and reinstalling (Scan for hardware changes) via device manager?

I removed the drives via manager and when Windows finds them, they come back as CD drives, not DVD drives. Can I (rebuild) the registry with my install disc?

Disconnect them literally, pulling the cables off the connector.

Reboot.

Look in BIOS and Device Manager and confirm that they do not show up at all.

Reconnect the drives.

Reboot and see if they are now recognized correctly.

Yeah! Do as suggested by sonic.
I remember once my x16 lane graphic card showed up and worked as if it were running on the x1 lane. Turned out that it was due to loose cable connection.
So, remove them completely and re-connect. May be this will do the job.

you could also try running
Code:
cfs /scannow
in an elevated command prompt, but remember that not everythin will be detected/fixed on the first run, so multiple runs will be necessary.

Find the command prompt shortcut and right click it. Choose "run as administrator".

You can also modify that shortcut so it ALWAYS runs as admininstrator. Much more convenient. Look at the shortcut's properties/advanced.
