When upgrading from xp to win7 is a win old folder made? I am comfused as MS states that you must use easy transfer. Is the old folder for use in vista upgrades?

You need to do a Clean Install which wipes out everything on the boot partition so Easy Transfer or some other method of backing up your data is needed. There is no Windows.old folder created.

I was wrong on this, you can get a Windows.old as SIW2 mentions below. Sorry for the wrong info.

You should get a Windows.old folder if you boot the 7 dvd, select Custom Install, DON'T format the partition you want to install onto - just make sure it is highlighted and click Next.

That doesn't replace EasyTransfer, as you will need to fish out your data manually from the Windows.old folder.

Easy transfer and Windows old folder.

Thamk you Ztruker and S1W2 for your replies. What I have done is downliad ET to my C drive and transferred to my D drive. I have a file with a .MIG ending which must be the easy transfer file. After I install W7 on my C drive I will transfer back again. Sound OK to you guys? If I get a Win old folder when I install W7 I'll just delete it.
