I have the 64bit Ultimate installed on my laptop and plan to install the 64bit Premium on another machine. Will Easy Transfer work when going between the two different levels (Ultmate to Premium)?

Thank you.

Yes, I've transferred from Ultimate to Home Premium and it went fine. I never even thought about it until you asked...

Thank you. I'm glad to hear that for I'm really a worry wart.

Hi all

What actually does "Easy Transfer" do. I can't say I've ever used this type of application or ever needed to.

I always separate my User / Application data from the OS so I never have to worry about losing data.

I keep OS'es in their own partition ( I'm using about 40 GB for RTM W7 X-64 Ultimate) where I install the OS and applications e.g Photoshop, Office etc etc.

Data I keep in different partitions / disks.

If I get another machine I just back the stuff up to an external USB drive (or drives) with acronis true image and restore on to the new machine. Provided you are not talking of several TB of data you don't even need a backup program - just copy the data with explorer to the USB disk and then plug it in to your new computer.

BTW another advantage of keeping the OS separate is that if you need to recover the OS, move it to another disk etc etc you don't lose your user data even if you have to re-format the OS partition. You can also make a Bootable Image restore giving you the possibility of a "Bare Metal recovery" if your system really gets hosed up.

Cheers
jimbo

As well as the usual docs, pics, music, etc. you can transfer Windows settings, program settings and Shared Items - saves time after a reinstall.

Might be worth transferring only those last few items - if you already have your data separate.
