I am using Windows Live Mail. I cannot send or receive mail. I put in the POP and SMTP exactly as it is in my desktop but it won't work. So I can only use Internet mail which is inconvenient since my main mail is on roadrunner.

Your SMTP Server is smtp-server.roadrunner.com. Your POP Server is pop-server.roadrunner.com.
So I downloaded Pegasus, disliked it but had the same problem. Can anyone help? Either tell me what I'm doing wrong, or refer me to an easy POP email program.

Are all account details identical to those on the desktop? Does the desktop still receive mail?

Yes, exactly and the message I get when I insert it is... The specified SMTP server does not appear to be a valid server name, do you want to use it anyway?

If I say "yes" I can't send any mail, but can receive.

Yes, both use Avast. Buffalo NY isn't even listed on the TW site.

Time Warner site isn't much help:

FAQ Categories

Internet >> E-mail Accounts >> What are my incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) mail server addresses?

Question:

What are my incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) mail server addresses?
Answer:

If your email address ends with @twc.com:
POP Server Address: mail.twc.com

SMTP Server Address: mail.twc.com

If your email ends with @rr.com:
An example of an incoming address would be pop-server.location.rr.com (your POP Server Name will have the same ending as your TWC Mail address)

An example of your outgoing address would be smtp-server.location.rr.com (your SMTP Server Name will have the same ending as your TWC Mail address).

My email ends in @roadrunner.com

Just got off line with Time Warner and they said that I have every thing set correctly and the error is with Live Mail... so what now?

First, what version of WEmail are you using?

The current version is: Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3505.0912)
I recommend that people use the 2012 version due to stability.

Second, have you tried to repair it?

exit out of WEmail
WinKey+R -> brings up the run dialog box. Type wlarp.exe in it, answer yes to the uac prompt, then select repair all WE programs.

If that doesn't help, try a reboot.

If that doesn't help....

exit out of WEmail, if running

Duplicate your working WEmail configuration is to copy the .oeaccount file to a flash drive
on the new machine, Create a temporary folder in the WEmail folder
put the .oeaccount file in that folder

To make the example easier, I'm going to use the following names
Bill - user name
RRmail - WEmail account name for roadrunner
account{xxxxxxxxx-XXXX-xxxx-XXXX-xxxxxxxxxxxx}.oeaccount - as the account file name
tmpoem - temporary WEmail folder name

Of course your information will be different, make the appropriate substitutions

On your desktop, navigate to your Windows Live Mail folder
--> Note: you might have to change the folder options to see hidden files
C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\RRmail

copy the .oeaccount file to a flash drive (should only be one account file in the folder)

On your new machine
navigate to your WEmail folder
C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\RRmail
--> assuming the same names were used

create a new folder tmpoem
copy the .oeaccount file from teh flash drive to this new folder

Fire up WEmail. You should see a "new" account in the left pane.

I have limited connectivity, so I mifght not be very responsive. Saw your post and thought I'd offer some suggestions. I can't guarantee that I can get on to follow up though.

Perhaps another member can help if you get stuck or have more questions.

Bill

I can't do all that. It's been rebooted and rebooted. It's Live Mail... 2011 I've had this problem since I got the laptop and just never really attacked the problem. But we are going on vacation and previously I just had everyone change my address to gmail... then change it backwhen I return, but I shouldn't have to do that. It should work. I want it fixed or I want to download a mail program where I can keep my roadrunner email. Do you know of any? I dont even like Live Mail. I am not proficient enough to feel comfortable doing all the things you have suggested... and I shouldn't have to.

Then I suggest that you uninstall WEmail 2011. If you don't want to upgrade to WEmail 2012 then you might try Thunderbird

Or pick one of these. Five Best Email Clients

The instructions I provided were not that complicated, copy a file from one machine, create a new directory, copy the file to that new location.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I'm out.

You already tried the Pegasus email client program and had the same problem, right?

What version of Avast are you using, and is it the same version on the Desktop and Laptop?
A change was made in Avast 8 in how email scanning works.
You could at least temporarily disable email scanning in Avast (if you are using it).

What port # are you using for the outgoing smtp server?

I called Microsoft tech support for Windows 7 Live Mail and they took over my computer remotely and said the cause was a trogan in the network of my computer and laptop. I paid them to clean it up. Took 3 hrs but we got it. It's fixed. Iveeno, was the name of the tech support. So now I have Microsoft security for life.

OK, when I Googled tech support for Windows 7 Iveera came up and I called the number.... now I realize they are not with Microsoft, he is just certified by them. Ugh. Now I'll never know if I really had a Trojan or not. But the problem is fixed.
