desktop preview in aero peek and no classic view

Hi,

I just installed Windows 7, and there are mostly 2 things I dislike so far:

1) Instead of trying to explain this, I'll just start with a picture :

As you can see, when I put my mouse on a thumbnail, it hides all windows and it displays a full size preview of that item, but it also leaves empty windows frames of open windows visible, which I find very ugly and can't think of a decent reason to exist (I'd just hide everything..., or nothing...).

Do you also have this? Is there any way to keep the popup preview but hide those ugly empty rectangles?

2) I never liked the "new" way to organise the control panel, I always chose classic view, but I can't find how to set it.

any idea?

That's Aero peek. You could disable it, you'll still have the thumbnail previews, but they won't show the full window in the background when you mouse over the preview window, unless you click on it. Or you could just leave it on, and click Show Desktop on the far right taskbar. That will still give you the thumbnail previews, but not show all the transparent windows in the background.

The Control Panel you can change up at the top right of the control panel where it says Category/Large/Small icons View.

I already knew it was possible to disable the popup preview, but my question was only regarding the transparant windows. Sorry if I did not make that clear.

That's the point of aero peek. To show you a hidden window within the other windows that are open.

(What the hell are you doing btw? That's a slew of windows)

well, I am not a beginner with computers (far from it) and I am just telling it is irrelevant to show those empty rectangles, the point being to take a quick look at a window and then decide if we make it active or not, it just makes useless noise to have those empty windows.

My only interest from the beginning was to know if anyone knew of a way to get rid of those transparent frames while keeping the popup preview feature, which I like. I think it would be so much cleaner if it would just hide everything but the window the mouse is over.

My two cents - Aero is pretty and Aero peek is cool enough. I don't use them though. I stick with the classic look. Maybe because it is familiar. I do like some the subtle features of Aero, but the transparent title bar ws the killer nuisance for me.

I already actually gave you a way to do this. Use Show Desktop to hide windows on the desktop and just show a window you mouse over the preview of. And the answer to changing the control panel view.


The "transparent frames" you call, are the windows you have open. You'd have to get rid of those, to get rid of the transparent frames. Or turn off Aero Peek, or Aero.

hi, sorry if I didn't reply to that, I perfectly know what those rectangles are, but I did not come here to be told to either work in full screen mode, minimise all windows manually, or show desktop, in order to get rid of those transparent frames.

I will let you know if I find a way to tweak transparency or disable it ( I don't mean the transparency setting in personalise, I am still talking about the transparent frames, I am talking about the same behavior as with the shortcut "win + space" , seeing through windows to see desktop, there is no reason to do that in the taskbar case, we don't want to view the desktop)

Hello Hdfrango,

You can select one of the Basic and High Contrast Themes (ex: Windows Basic) to not have the clear rectangles from Aero Peek anymore. However, you will also not have the thumbnail previews either since that is part of Aero. It's a all or none situation I'm afraid.

all I know for now is that somehow, aero peek does the following: it does a desktop preview and on top of it it shows the actual window of the thumbnail the mouse is over, I just hope we could either get rid of the desktop preview step (window would show on top of other open ones) or just make the frames fully transparent or change the behavior to full desktop show instead of desktop preview.

I know we can disable desktop preview, but I wonder if it is possible to totally prevent the system from doing it at all, not just from the taskbar button

edit: I read a bit more about it, and now I see that the desktop preview feature itself is part of aero peek, it's not separate, it's the desktop preview that uses aero peek, not the other way around
