EPSON Perfection V500 Photo Scanner

I just connected an Epson V500 to my Windows 7 PC. I did download the proper driver from Epson's website & it does work.

My question is how to properly install the other software on the supplied CD. I may not use any of them but won't know till I try. There are 6 other apps, including the user guide, on the CD according to its directory and each one has a setup.exe file. It just seems strange to have to do 6 installs in order to get the other software installed.

I did try the autorun and there is an option to select among 4 apps, but the CD directory lists more than that. I was interested in the Copy Utility, Creativity Suite, EasyPrintModule, and the ICC Profile. The autorun list the Creativity Suite but not the others. I don't know if they are part of the initial driver/scan software or the Creativity Suite.

Has anyone tried installing the optional software on Windows 7?

You are right in that Epson has an installer for each application.

Autorun should still give you a choice, typically an easy install and a custom install.

An easy install as you would expect installs all the apps, whereas a custom install gives you the choice as to what you install.

Personally, I'd just use Windows 7's scanning software, but it is your choice as to what you use.

I've never used Windows 7's scanning software. How well does it work with 35mm slides? I have a lot of Kodachrome & Ektachrome slides, and quite a few 35mm negatives.

I can't answer that one as I've never used slides, but I would imagine Windows 7's scanning utility would not be good enough for slides.

My son-in-law, who is a keen orthinolgist, uses a dedicated slide scanner (a Kodak I believe) along with the scanner's software. He tells me he does this because he needs high resolution scans that don't take too long.

Have you read your scanner's help files? They may give you some answers.

I did have a Canon scanner some years ago, and I do recall it installed the software using different installers for each of six functions.

Perhaps it'll be just as well to install all the Epson software so that each function is available if you need it.

What you could do is copy the Epson disc contents to a folder on your hard drive, and then drill down for each installer and install each utility separately.

The auto installer has 4 items to install. The CD directory has 9 different folders. Obviously some of these some of these are lumped together in order to reduce things down to the 4 auto install apps.

Unfortunately the scanner did not come with Window 7 drivers & scanning software. Packaged with the disc was a note: STOP - Read This First. It says before inserting the CD to go to Epson’s website to get the latest software, which was only the driver & scanning software. There are no further instructions on what to do about the stuff on the CD, which includes the User Guide.

I get concerned when I see an ICC Profile on the CD and no instructions on what to do with it. By process of elimination & playing with the scanner software I’ll figure it out.

I think the ICC Profile can be used both with your scanner and your printer.

If you check your printer settings they should give you the option of which colour profile to use.
