Error code (0x80070002) when attempting back up

I am attempting to perform a back up ready to install windows 10. Each time I try I get the following message :
"The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)"
What is this and what do I need to do to over come this problem?
I should also say that I am creating a system image, is this necessary?
I would be grateful for some help please.

I'm up on Win 10 Pro, want to do backups, and get the same error trying to backup to a WD drive via USB 3. It does not save the configuration or actually try to start doing a backup. No file name is mentioned. I was able to separately create a system image to this drive.
