Error message 'javascript:void(0)' - Unable to open some pages

Hi,
I've recently been having problems opening some pages in Internet Explorer. Today for example I wanted to go to HP's support site. I got to the main site but when I clicked on Product Support the page wouldn't open and the message 'javascript:void(0)' appeared in the bottom left hand corner. It seems to be a fairly random problem as it only affects some websites. Grateful for any help in resolving this. Thanks.

Are you using a 'proxy server'?

Using proxy servers act as go betweens between an IP address and the website. It renders users anonymous, hence its popularity. But it can interfere with websites when loading scripts.

No I'm not using a proxy server. Is it likely to be something to do with my broadband service provder (O2)?

Read this article What Does JavaScript Void(0) Mean

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  Java SE Downloads
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u27 allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u27-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Thanks for the advice Jacee. I checked my current version of Java and it seems I already have the most recent version (version 6 update 27). I've checked for other versions and there are none - only the most recent version. The article was helpful. It mentions Pop-up blockers and I do have my Internet Explorer pop-up blocked activated. I'll try turning it off to see if that helps. I guess I'll just have to put up with pop-ups.

Incidentally, it may be coincidence but I only noticed the problem when I upgraded to IE9!

Javascript != Java

Jacee's comments about downloading the latest version of JRE, the Java Runtime Environment, have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with this JavaScript problem.

Java is a programming language whose code is compiled into a bytecode and then interpreted by a Java Virtual Machine. JavaScript is a scripting language which gets interpreted (and is not compiled at all) by a JavaScript interpreter typically included with a web browser.

The two languages, Java and JavaScript, are completely unrelated. They share some features like object oriented programming. However one cannot write a Java program and run it in a JavaScript interpreter or write a JavaScript script and run it from the Java Virtual Machine.

So telling someone to download and install the latest JRE is of absolutely no help with any JavaScript problem.
