I get an error sound like "da dum" every few seconds, unpredictably, but reliably. I dont get any warnings or visual confirmation of any kind, nothing freezes or changes. I checked event logs but didnt find anything, I have no idea what is causing windows to make the sound, nor do I know exactly when it started. has anyone had a similar problem, or have any ideas?
Oh yea, when i view device manager, it constantly refreshes, and there is one "other devices" but i cant figure out what it is, and the sound continues when it is disabled. previous install of win 7 didnt have this problem.
help appreciated.
Thanks in advance

My suggestion would be to unplug any/all USB devices and see if that corrects the problem. In the meantime, you could always disable the notification sound. ;)

Hi Guys

Anybody found a cause / fix for this yet? I'm having the exact same symptoms and for the life of me cannot figure out what the cause is.

Just to elaborate a little, the "da dum" is the same notification sound that you receive whenever you unplug a USB device.

My gut says that it may be a driver issue with some embedded hardware, for example my fingerprint reader or the built in webcam - so Windows is somehow notifying me that one of these devices is being "plugged in and unplugged" all the time, if you know what I mean..... But I still haven't figured out a way to confirm this.

I'm running Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion tx 2500 tablet and this is the first issue I have had. Well, more of an annoyance than an issue.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cheers

T-Man

Uh, no. Like I said, its the same sound/notification you would receive when unplugging a USB device. Its not at all similar to the error sound made when a key is held down.

Think we're onto something here.....

Spot on. Seems like its my Fingerprint Sensor.

Its an Authen Tec AES1610. Not sure what my next step is here, but I'm gonna start by trying to install some drivers that didn't arrive via Windows Update.

Went to Authentec's site and they have some Windows 7 specific software that I'm gonna try. Not sure if it includes Device Drivers, but its as good a place to start as any......

Might have better results if you do it in safe mode. (will stop that driver keep loading/unloading)

It is a hardware issue

HP tx tablets and possibly other HP laptops have some sort of problem with windows 7 so far. Probably because HP engineers designed the hardware to specifically work only with MS as opposed to designing it to just work regardless of the operating system. That is why it was more than a year before it was possible to install any debian based linux system on it. (i.e. ubuntu).

On a tx 2500 I have the same issue but all of my devices are accounted for in the device manager, so it must be from some bit of hardware. I suspect whatever controls the keyboard, sound buttons, or other keys which were notorious for not working properly on other OS's. I've updated the drivers but no luck yet. This is probably something HP is going to have to fix by updating their drivers.

As a side note to some of you with not so clever banners: Windows bashing is stupid in general but doing so on this forum is especially so.
