Running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Compaq Presario CQ58 laptop.

Installed Virtualbox but when trying to install Windows 7, I get a 'Windows failed to start' message. Picture attached showing full message.

The hard disk was completely wiped, leaving nothing but one partition. Ubuntu didn't have any objections to using the entire hard disk.

I got the same message before I installed Ubuntu. I tried to do a fresh install of Windows 7 in preparation for a dual-boot situation with Ubuntu. This worked before I decided to obliterate all partitions.

I've used Diskpart to clean the drive, also...

In the world of Windows, do you need to have some sort of extra partition?

The HP user forums aren't letting me fully create a user account so I can't ask their community any questions.

How can I do a new install?

To make clear, this isn't an issue with Linux. The issues began when I wiped the hard disk clean of ALL partitions. Linux just happened to install without any problems. If I attempt to overwrite Linux with Windows 7, the same situation arises.

Are you installing to a dedicated hard drive? or are you using a virtual hard drive image? If you are using a VHD under virtual box I can guarantee you it wont work most of the time as I have tried.
Instead try using a VDI and install Windows 7 normally, without using diskpart.

Lastly is the Windows 7 Guest 64 bits? If it is then either you probably have Virtualization disabled in your BIOS, make sure it is set to on, or your processor does not support it.

No luck with the above but I went back to the orginal software that came with the PC, Windows 7 Home Premium only to find out it can't be installed from a CD! No device drivers was the message after I chose my region from the install screen. After some short research, I prepared a USB stick with the software and booted with this and Windows is now installed.

What a nightmare of a computer!

Thanks for the help given. It spurred me on to get this finally resolved.
