Eset Smart Security

Well, after trying many different security bundles and anti virus packages - tried MSE, Comodo (firewall & anti virus), Kaspersky (firewall & anti virus), and ESET (firewall & anti virus), I finally decided on purchasing ESET Smart Security for my system and the wife's system. Bought a 2 year, 2 user license.

For those wondering with Windows 7, my experiences are as follows:

MSE - Good anti virus and no lag on the system at all, even during a scan, but I didn't like the lack of options and logging and was really looking for a firewall as well.

Comodo - Really liked the firewall. It seemed rock solid with all the tests I threw at it, but the anti virus...can't say the same. In fact, it missed several things in testing as well as allowed certain files through that other packages found. The anti virus was a non-starter for me. Not ready for primetime yet.

Kaspersky - I really wanted to like this product. The interface is great, but overall, not pleased with the performance. I was trying the Beta 8 release for Windows 7. Everytime I tried a full scan, it would crash. Not to mention that during the full scan, the system was very, very slow. This is a quad core system with 8 GB of RAM. Overall just didn't care for it and of course not happy with the crashing. I realize it was a beta, but just not good enough for me.

ESET - Seems rock solid so far. The firewall has passed all the same tests that Comodo did and the anti virus engine picked up what Comodo anti virus didn't. It also is very light on system resources, even during a full scan. No lag on the system at all.

I would highly suggest anyone looking for a new security package, you can't lose with ESET. For those that don't want to spend the money or can't afford it, perhaps a combination of Comodo Firewall and MSE would be your best choice...IMO anyway.

Some more kudos for ESET as well as questioning of some of the top rankings by places like PC Magazine of Norton products and others (which I truly believe has everything to do with advertising dollars and not the quality of the software):

Too bad you didn't test drive the NIS 2010 beta for Windows 7. NIS 2009 has worked really well for me on XP and Vista (no system drag, fast updates, unobtrusive scans). I have seen the problem with blocking mapped network drives and that's a real showstopper. If you need to map drives then definitely choose something else, but that's the only serious problem I've seen in the field. I have not seen seriously compromised PCs running NIS2009. Even so, I do not trust NIS exclusively. I also use Zemana AntiLogger or Mamutu, and MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware for on-demand scanning.

ESET is not without it's flaws and quite frankly it may have something to do with Windows 7 and ESET never claiming Smart Security works on Windows 7, but the other day, the shared folder that was working just fine previously, was no longer accessible on the other machine on my network.

After some more tweaking and disabling the firewall temporarily, I managed to get it back. That is the one thing that is annoying me about ESET. I don't understand how a shared folder is allowed and then not allowed. I just want to share a single folder and have it accessible by the other machine.

Eset AV is great, their FW is just getting there. I much prefer the flexibilty of Agnitum's FW products. For some years I've been using NOD-32 and Agnitum Firewall Pro. One nice thing about Eset & Agnitum is they have native 64-bit support. I tried the early Eset suite beta, and was lukewarm on the FW Now I'm trying Agnitum's Security Suite which is out with "beta support for Win 7" , with the firewall I like but an unknown AV, which OTOH picked something out - arrggh !

Ive had no end of network problems under W7 with Eset and now i use MSE for my W7 boxes.
We run Eset v4 at work and its been fantastic with XP but on each PC ive put W7 on ive had sharing problems. Its been down to the Firewall malfunctioning and if i disable it things have got better but for now i just use the W7 firewall and MSE.

A single user license for NOD32 AV v4.0 costs $39.99 US on the ESET website. You can buy version 3.0 from Newegg and (they claim) download version 4 for a free upgrade for $29.99, so you save $10. It's not unusual to find software cheaper from third party sites.

I've used ESET's NOD32 antivirus for at least two years now, on all my workstations and laptops.

All I can say is, it's an incredibly good product; and I would definitely recommend it.

I've written them about my struggles and they have always answered in a timely manner and have made several good suggestions for the configuration.

After doing so, it has made all of the connection issues go away. Not sure why it took so long for that pop up to appear, but I think I've got things going now.

Im also finding ESS firewall to be a bit of a problem when trying to prevent an app access

yes, but the AV part is good... I also get annoyed sometimes by the firewall ... buy overall firewall is still good...

but I just use the AV and Windows 7 Firewall.... even conficker didn't have a chance ;D

Looks like I spoke too soon. Now the shared folder over the LAN is not available anymore on the other system. The only way to make it available is to disable the firewall and allow all traffic.

I have written support again and unless they can come up with an easy, quick fix, I think I am done with the firewall. It's useless if I can't access a shared folder on the nework. I told them such and actually told them I want my money back for the Smart Security package and just want the anti virus for the two systems now, if they can't quickly fix the issue.

As I stated, the anti virus is rock solid, but this shared folder annoyance has finally gotten on my nerves. I myself am a programmer and if I can't figure this out, how do they expect typical users who have computers networked together to figure this out?
