Hi spinksy,
Are you sure that's an ethernet port? It could be a socket to connect a wired landline, in which case an ethernet cable plugged in there will be useless. If it IS an ethernet cable, then try connecting a friend's laptop there and see whether it works; if it doesn't, then it's probably an issue with the socket.

thanks,
thats a good point. i just assumed it was an ethernet port as the router is connected to one just like it in the lounge room for distribution around the house. when i connect via LAN directly to the router it works so its not my laptop.

i am only trying to connect via LAN to hopefully achieve a faster speed than with the wireless, however if you could tell me now that that is pointless then i wont bother continuing.

The router has two kinds of (quite similar-looking) sockets; one goes to the phone line (in this case, probably the wall) and another goes to the computer. The phone cable is slightly smaller than the ethernet cable, so if you can identify them, you should be able to resolve the problem yourself. All the best.
If you would like to know why I got that doubt, well, when I was about ten years old (and very much a computer addict! :D), I tried to use the internet by plugging the computer into the wall using a phone cable lying around; needless to say, I found myself facing the same situation as the one you mention. :)

it is an ethernet port that i am refering to not the phone line port, from one of the outputs of the router the ethernet cord is connected to the wall, (to distribute to the rest of the house?, or someone has just plugged it in, i dont know)

Uh-oh. Did you try connecting a friend's laptop? If that connects, then let's see what to do next. If it doesn't work either, then most likely there's something wrong with the socket itself. Check it out.
EDIT: If one of the outputs of the router goes to the socket; are yu trying to remove the router cable and connecting to that socket? Or are you connecting to another socket entirely?

The first thing to test here is the Router, Take the laptop / PC to the router and plug it in see if it works, If it does then your wiring / socket is faulty!!

yeah i did that first and it works, and im running off the wireless now so the router is fine for both wireless and LAN.

Yes, that cable. does it work elsewhere on your computer?
If the wall socket is bad, call maintenance to replace it. Call them anyway to test it.

Who's house is this? New house? If there's one cable from the router to a socket that's supposed to feed the rest of the house, there's got to be a switch (network distributor) somewhere. You can't feed multiple house sockets with a single router port (at least not at the same time/use). Could be the switch is powered off or otherwise not working. Newer homes that are pre-wired for Ethernet will generally have a distribution panel somewhere. Each of the wall sockets would be wired to the distribution panel (or switch) and the switch wired to the router. The router is generally in the same location.

im not sure what you mean by elsewhere on my computer, i only have one ethernet port and nothing else to plug into.

its not my house it is managed by an agency, it is reasonably new maybe 3-5 years, i did read about the switch elsewhere and people have said they found theirs in cupboards etc. i had a look around and couldnt find it so i assumed it would have been built into the wall since the router plugs into there.

yes its a share accommodation

The switch should be somewhere that's accessible--Not built into a wall. It's an electronic devise that needs power and air cooling. Some are as large as a DVD player but most home switches will be about the size of a router. If this is an apartment, townhouse or other managed group property, the switch is probably in a utility closet that's not accessible to the public or individuals. You'll have to report the problem to property management.

Hold on a second... You said you plugged your PC directly into the wall socket and it worked? You shouldn't need a router. There must already be a router on the other end of your house circuit. Unplug the router from the wall socket and wire your PC directly to the wall socket--In each room. The circuits are already split.

What router? You shouldn't need a router. If you had the router plugged into the wall while testing the other rooms, that probably killed the switch. Go directly to the wall socket from your PC in each room and see what happens--No router.
