Ethernet Port not detecting cable

Hello almighty sevenforums

I have a strange problem.
Overnight my computer suddenly lost contact with its ethernet cable. Cable was not unplugged and it was not a stormy night.

It no longer detects a cable and i have updated the drivers.

I usually run a cable straight from the router.
This no longer works.
The strange part is that if i run a cable(same cable that wont work in the computer) by a D-link switch and then to my computer it works fine.

Any thoughts?
PS: not in a hurry, as i have internet. But i've been wrapping my head around this and cant think of a solution, or cause.

Only thing that I can think of is that ....

some network infrastructure devices have a "switch" that allows use of Crossover cables as normal oe Vice Versa, (basically changes the pins used for transmit and receive ). This can be something that is controlled by a hardware Switch or Button, Or can be a software option in the device control menus.

Check the manual for your router and see if you have this feature, how it is set and what it is set on, (should be on Straight Not Crossover) It would appear that you are set as a crossover and adding the switch is correcting this setting. These things can be set by accident especially software controlled options where a slight power dip can reset devices to default.

The following method has always worked for me whenever I have needed to get an Ethernet port working: Do a Windows Update; if an update for your network adapter shows up in the list, install only that one update; then reboot the computer.
