I'm trying to plug a USB camera into the back of my computer, but the computer won't acknowledge that I plugged it in. I don't get an error message or anything, it simply doesn't seem to notice anything. (I've tried it with a flash drive, too—same deal.)

I'm not missing drivers for the device itself, as I've plugged them both into other ports and they work fine. It seems that the port itself is the problem. I just reinstalled Windows yesterday after getting infected with a System Fix virus, so that may have something to do with it.

EDIT: It may have something to do with my BIOS, as I changed my boot order for the reinstall. I'm not aware of anything else being changed, but it's possible.

If I understand you correctly, a pair of USB ports on the back are not working but other ports on your computer are working, are these USB ports on the back not working by chance blue in color?
Check and make sure that you have all USB ports enable in BIOs and then make sure that you have the newest chipset drivers for your motherboard installed.

The ports are blue, yes. I'm not sure what that signifies, but prior to the reinstall they were both working fine.

The blue ports indicate USB 3 ports and you will need to install the USB 3 drivers for your motherboard to get the USB 3 ports to work, also make sure that the USB 3 port is enabled in BIOs.

It does say in my device manager under "Other Devices" that the drivers for a USB aren't installed, but it won't tell me the manufacturer or any details. Updating drivers from there doesn't work.

You need to go to your motherboard manufacturer’s site or pc manufactures site and download the drivers from there.

did the device management (devmgmt.msc) "Other Devices" heading go away now that you installed the driver?

Is it down with the other USB devices instead?

If so, what is the version number it displays in the drivers main tab?

(sometimes Windows Update will reinstall a newer driver even though it may not be best for your particular OEM system. Thats why I ask, also to see if it installed correctly.)

oh, and rebooting may help as well as give you a chance to be sure the BIOS Setup options allow the USB 3.0 ports to be active like the previous member mentioned)

Let me know...:)

Make sure that the USB 3 option is enabled in BIOs, if so then try installing the chipset driver first and then the USB 3 drivers.

No, "Other Devices" is still showing in the Device Manager. I checked my BIOS, and USB 3.0 is enabled, but even after installing the chipset and drivers it won't do anything.

From device manager delete the USB 3 ports and let Windows re-detect them.

Depending on your settings it should automatically detect it in Windows Update but reboot first then check there and Device Management.

I've rebooted and installed all updates, and still nothing. Webcam not detected. Interestingly, even though I uninstalled the USB 3 in Device Manager, it's showing up again under "Other Devices" now that I've run updates.

So it does say that it is the USB 3.0 device, but that it is not working in device manager under other devices. If you go to the drivers tab it shows a version number and if you click the to button (show drivers? i think) it gives a list of Signed Drivers?is roll back an option?

If not does a similar USB 3.0 driver install show up under windows updates as a installed driver? Is it listed as a successful or failure installation there?

Also, just out of curiosity, did you save the Windows.old folder when you reinstalled windows (its an option in the custom installation process, and would be located in the c : drive directory, right next to windows....

Under Driver Details it says that "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device," and I can't find anything relating to USB under my Installed Updates.

I didn't save Windows.old, as I performed a complete wipe.

Sounds like your USB 3 ports might be bad then, if it is under warranty return it or just use the normal USB 2 ports which you should have plenty of.

As long as the BIOS settings were saved when you exited (or like you said it was already enabled) then I could only imagine that it would be a H/W component malfunction.

May want to check w/manufacturer to see if this a problem they are familiar with, although I don't see a mention of anything on their site.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas on this on - but agree with mgp1964 since you are just using USB 2.0 devices, the 3.0's are unnecessary. If you need more ports you can always pick up a cheap powered USB hub to hook up whatever you may need.

Good luck!
Mike :)
