Event Triggering in Windows --anybody know how to do it.

Hi all
It's AGES and AGES since I did any programming -- but is it possible to run some sort of script / program when say a user defined event occurs. I know most OS'es have some sort of event triggering mechanism but getting at it is the problem.

This sort of stuff is second nature in Linux but how to do it in Windows ??

It MUST be possible --for example you can set the system to play sounds on a whole series of events such as when Mail arrives or when you start / finish navigation. This says to me that there must be some sort of event triggering mechanism -but whether it's acessible via an API ??.

I don't really want to do a whole load of C++ -- probably wouldn't know how to anyway -- just a simple method (if there is one).

Windows Control Panel Sound applet has some sort of this feature built in.

Open Control Panel - Sound - Sounds. This section has a limited set of events. I am not sure whether it is possible to add new events to this list.

You can also see the excellent tutorial on Sounds Change by Brink.

Some of our learned members should be able to throw some light on the programming part.

Don't know if this is the kind of thing you're looking for but, maybe try the Task Scheduler. For example, I have a task set up to launch Pandora Radio at a specific time as an alarm clock.

It MUST be possible --for example you can set the system to play sounds on a whole series of events such as when Mail arrives or when you start / finish navigation.

I use Thunderbird as my email client and you can set it up to "announce" when mail arrives in your in box. This is done within Thunderbird's preference settings. I also use Firefox as my browser. I use an add-on called Navigational Sounds that gives Firefox the same navigation sounds as Internet Explorer.

None of this is probably relevant to what you are trying to do though.

I don't know how to set a trigger event, but I can get you to the Event Viewer, maybe it will help.
Just type "event viewer" in the Start button search box, click on event viewer.

Darcy, the event viewer you mention is a windows log for all the events which includes information, warnings and critical errors which occur on windows and these logs are used for debugging the problems.

What the OP asking is for a event activated programs or scripts, which are fired upon certain events selected by the user. The Windows Event Viewer can not be of any help in this issue.

In Windows Task Scheduler, you can get a "trigger" for your started event. There are 3 pulldown menus. First is "start task on sched", "at startup", "at idle" and one is "ON AN EVENT". Once you select that, then the next pulldown is the category of types of events, and once you select one of those, then the 3rd pulldown has subcategories.

I've never tried this, but it's pretty robust.
