exessive memory usage

I've got a widget that displays my CPU and Memory usage. Over the last couple of months I've seen memory usage occasionally jump up way beyond my 'idle' figure (which is around 21 - 24%) to as much as 90%. This occurs following boot-up. No CPU usage is apparent. I've looked at my Resource Monitor (and I have my 'Services' well under control) but nothing appears that is different to the normal usage. If I do a re-start it always goes back to regular usage. Basically, something is grabbing memory at start-up. I'm always conscious of my OS doing stuff in the background but this excess usage issue occurs at boot-up which is not the way I've seen it working in the past. I thought it was Malware Bytes 3 and gave them a hard time, but it wasn't them and I apologised. During my fracas with MB we ran AdwCleaner, JRT and Sophos virus removal but nothing showed up that made any difference. Anyone know what I should do; if, in fact, I should do anything?

Hello Roy. Yes, Update is there under delayed start but it is set to notify only; however, that doesn't mean it isn't busy in the background, I just assumed it wasn't. What is it doing? If I disable it does it mean I won't get notifications?

Hi,

Notify DOES NOT stop it looking(running).
The better option PERFORMANCE wise is Download let me choose

have a look in your CBS log(C-Windows-logs-cbs (top text one).
You dont have to understand it Just look at the times its running AND how often while your online
Even set to dissabled DOES NOT stop it.
Turning OFF the driver update part of WU helps.

You might also want to look at your task manager LOCAL for 3rd party start-ups
and any peripheral update GUI settings ESPESCIALLY printers. even OEM bloatware.

OK, I've switched to 'Download let me choose' although I can only hazard a guess as to why this is better performance-wise: does it stop Windows constantly checking?
I appreciate the log indications: yes, constantly talking on-line; however, I assume that is not a recent occurrence and has always been that way, so not causing my recent memory hogging... yes?
I can't find any reference to WU Driver Updates anywhere; where is that option?
Task mgr LOCAL showed on Windows Host Processes (5 or 6 of them) nothing else.
I have everything tightly controlled on my Services access page with nothing even remotely unnecessary starting up. Also, Sys Config Startup is pared down to ONLY those startup items required.
This is why I am mystified as to what is doing it, and why only sometimes.

I've had no problems with updates for some considerable time
last update was the monthly roll-up on the 12th of July; installed no problem.
This memory issue dates back before then.

Just to be perfectly clear: the Services screenshot doesn't bother showing all the manual entries that have not started;
I just included a few to indicate where active services stop.

baffled

Can I assume from the silence that it has everyone else baffled too?
If I hadn't run all those security scans I would swear it was malware that got past MB3; but even MB couldn't figure it out either.

Things I notice.

You have Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro all checked to start at boot. You also have many other things that don't need to start a boot; example (Google update svc.). Things that start at boot will use memory.

Some members have problems using Kaspersky and Malwarebytes active at the same time.

Even though it indicates those services stopped, are they still loading at start-up? I didn't realise that. Should I disable them all? I thought because they showed as disabled in the other Services list - that I originally posted - and they were not shown as running in the Config list, that they were inactive. I see looking at your screenshot they are all disabled. Why does one services list show one thing and the other show another: that's what I didn't understand.
The Kaspersky service is Password Manager; been very useful for many years now.
