Hello!

Is it possible to give a standard user account (non-administrator) the acces to install some programs?

How about giving him the acces to command "scan for hardware changes" in Device manager, just so that an external eSATA harddrive is recognized?

How about deleting shortcut icons from the desktop?

I have been checking out "Group Policy Editor" and couldn't find those settings, can you help me if they are there?

Thank You!

I can't say for sure but my answer would be no you can't, the idea of the Standard Account is so that you can't alter anything which is why I think it's usually given to the kids or visitors who use your machine and you don't want them deleting your programs or altering your work.

Hang around and see what the experts have to say on the matter before you take my word for it, oh and Welcome to the Forum enjoy your stay here and why not fill in your system specs. it helps make things easier to help you should you need help in the future. ;)

Is it possible to give a standard user account (non-administrator) the acces to install some programs?

If the program can be installed like Google Chrome then yes. Chrome installs in a users directory (C:\Users\<username>) instead of Program Files, this means no administrative power is required.

How about deleting shortcut icons from the desktop?

Sure, change permissions of C:\Users\Public\Desktop or store all icons in C:\Users\<username>\Desktop

Sure, change permissions of C:\Users\Public\Desktop or store all icons in C:\Users\<username>\Desktop

That folder doesn't exist on my computer. And the folder C:\Users\<account name>\Desktop already has permissions, but doesn't work anyway.

Right, thanks! ....but still doesn't work. As i just figured out, some shortcuts are in Program files folder, which cannot be modified. At least I know now. Thanks again.

How about eSATA drive recognizing? The only way I can get it to show is command "scan for hardware changes" in Device Manager. Even reseting a computer doesn't work. But you cannot give commands in the Device Manager in a Standard user account. Is there any other way to get my eSATA drive to work in non-administrator mode?

It will still install the drivers as normal and the account will be able to use the Drive unless told not to through permissions

The issue is not permissions to using the drive, but recognizing the drive. I don't know how to make windows recognize it without "scan for hardware changes" command, which is only available in Administrator account. As I said before, restarting the PC doesn't work.

It should recognize the drive - Is it an Internal or External Drive?

Try Show Hidden Drives from the admin account, then see if it shows up under the standard account.

Show Hidden Drives doesn't help, Britton30 thanks anyway.

It's an external drive WD 2tb eSATA. It recognizes it in BIOS, but windows shows it only if you poke with either Device Manager or 'hard disk management' in Computer Management. I guess it's no way to get it to work without the Administrator account.

Again the problem is only with eSATA recognition. If connected via Firewire and USB2.0 it shows up right away. Strange reset doesn't work though...
