Hi guys

Some help is needed if thats ok... first off, I am no computer expert so go easy on!

So last night, my girlfriend switched the netbook off by holding the on/off button. this morning while starting up is started some scan thing... that took about 5 minutes, was checking lots of files!

Everything, went as normal. When logging in, the minute i put my pasword in. a box flashed up saying title "explorer.exe - apllication error"followed with "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022). Click ok to close the application.

After pressing ok, there is just a black screen... and the cursor... nothing else.

I had to swtich off. after restarting, my "asus express gate cloud" started worked as normal, i can browse etc.
I then thought to try safe mode... worked fine. with networks etc too.

I googled a bit and found a post saying the same and some guy said to run "cmd scannow" so did that, when i did that it said there were files that could not be fixed and to check the log. I had a look and its just stuff i dont understand :(

Anyone able to help me at all? I dont have a virus protect on here and installed ccleaner it founf lots of DLL files and deleted them.... i dunno.

After this someone told me to restore to a previous point... did that.. and it said failed to restore due to a number of errors.

thanks

One of our Forum experts created this tutorial that may help.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219533-troubleshooting-windows-7-failure-boot.html

When using some of the native Windows 7 tools like Startup Repair and SFC (system file checker), if problems are found it's necessary to run the tool 3 times, rebooting in between each run.

Since you have a netbook, and I'm guessing no CD/DVD player readily available, it's going to limit your repair options if you have to "insert CD" or "burn to CD", etc. You might be able to use a USB flash drive instead but you'd also have to make sure that the BIOS is set to read from the flash drive as first option (the BIOS may be set to a default to read from hard drive first.)

Depending on what files got damaged or corrupted, or what else might have happened, you may have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive that could return the netbook to factory settings. But this option would also erase everything else from the hard drive.

chris,
Help us to help you by completing your System Specs. Here is how:

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
(left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

ADD the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
First try http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html .

And let us know, have you ever applied any custom theme with modified explorer.exe or explorerframe.dll ?

Your system specs says it is windows 7, but some more information relating bits and service pack will be more informative, to solve the issue.

I ran this as asked. got this

Wndows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. details are included in the CBS.Log windir\LogsCBS\

I would upload it but its 11MBs!
As for spec etc of netbook..
its windows 7 starter , 32 bit
processor is intel atom cpu n570 @ 1.66Ghz
Ram 2 Gb

I have never installed anything like new themes etc...
i find it odd that everything else works fine apart from normal mode. the only thing that has chaged on it was I started building my website via it using filezella and 1and1.co.uk.

If you can fix it I will give you free membership to us!!

Chris, at this point, as SFC is not being able to fix the corruptions, there are very limited things to do.

Back up your user data externally
, and then ...

First, try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html to an earlier date. See it works or not.

If not, the last resort is a factory restore. Follow the link Restore an Asus Netbook to factory settings , it will be helpful hopefully.

Usually such an issue occurs when some elements of explorer is changed manually, and then it does not allow the current user the permission to open the program. But for a starter edition it may not be the case.

chrissy,
I have a hard time buying into that.

We've never had anyone who could not install SPECCY and use SPECCY.

you go to control panel | Program and Features | scroll down to SPECCY | right-click on SPECCY | choose UNINSTALL.

After that use the link in my signature to download SPECCY.

For us to help you, you must help us.

If you can't manage that simple task, then you call over a friend.
Let that friend download and install SPECCY for you.

We've never had anyone who could not use SPECCY.

Chrissy,
I've reviewed the entire thread.

I agree with Archie:
Backup everything dear to your heart.
Perform a fresh install.

the how with your netbook, I do not know. You would need to go to the ASUS site.

While you are perusing the documentation you fetch about your netbook, then see if the amount of ram can be increased. You will never regret the few centavos you spend to increase your memory to the max the netbook permits.

I have an ASUS netbook, HA 1002 XP, which I wiped clean, installed Win 7 Ultimate, increased the ram to 2 GB (max possible) and also swapped out the HDD for a SSD. Performance is usable but nothing to brag about.

Definitely better than the XP that came on the netbook.

I was having the Black Screen of Death with mouser pointer and realised through Event Viwer (eventvwr.msc) that the explorer.exe crash was associated to the propsys.dll located in windows\system32 folder.

So, I managed to emulate a mini WinXP via Hiren's Boot, loaded a "health" propsys.dll from my other Windows 7 system and overwrote the corrupted one. Problem solved to me!
