explorer.exe not working

Little background:

It started a week ago, when my TV tuner got defected due to which my PC wasn't even getting started(due to some shorting). Then, when this problem got solved(removing TV tuner card), my processor was getting extremely hot(>90 degree C). I applied thermal paste to solve this problem and temperature came down to around 50s.


Here starts the main part:

Now my explorer will not work. My PC hung, and unable to do anything I resorted to CTRL-ALT-DEL. But even CTRL-ALT-DEL never responded. Then I started PC in Safe mode and somehow copied important data(media) from C and installed a fresh version of windows. but after a few hours same occurred. explorer.exe stopped, and PC hung. Then I restored it in safe mode, and after a few hours same occured(explorer stopped). Then I tried installing windows once more, but still problem persists.


During all this I used malwarebytes, hitmanpro, QuickHeal, Microsoft security essentials, and I can be sure of no virus being present in my system.
And, one more thing, my PC is working fine in safe mode(everything working).

mobo: asus p7h55-m lx
Ram: Kingston 4GB
processor: intel i3

If it just sits idle does it still lock up in the same amount of time? Usually a hard lockup like that is a hardware issue. Starting from a cold system if the lockup happens at nearly exactly the same system up time then what is usually the case is some hardware component reached the temperature where it fails.

Unless you know someone who is a competent PC hardware tech you will likely have to get service. Unless you have a pretty keen suspicion what the hardware component is.

If it just sits idle does it still lock up in the same amount of time? Usually a hard lockup like that is a hardware issue. Starting from a cold system if the lockup happens at nearly exactly the same system up time then what is usually the case is some hardware component reached the temperature where it fails.

Unless you know someone who is a competent PC hardware tech you will likely have to get service. Unless you have a pretty keen suspicion what the hardware component is.

Actually I noticed that after a very long time CTRL-ALT-DEL had got a reaction which was an error from windows(I don't remember the error right now).
And if this is really the issue(hardware component reaching the temperature where it fails), shouldn't it get failed in safe mode too. I think there shouldn't be much difference temperature wise.

It could be something that is not initialized in safe mode. I think the approach they take on bench work is to open up the case and boot the machine, spraying the suspected component with compressed air frequently to keep it cool. If it does not lock up after the usual time, they boot it cold again and just let it sit. If it locks up then they feel they have zeroed in on the component. But I am not a hardware guy. You might ask the Mod to transfer this thread to the Hardware and Drivers sub-forum. You may get more hw techies reading there than here.
