Solved Explorer Navigation Pane is Buggy/Hung-up

Explorer Navigation Pane hangs from time to time. A restart fixes the problem. I ran scannow and Windows reported "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." This just developed recently and wondered if it was indicative of a coming meltdown and what other diagnostic tools I can use to look for problems in the OS. I think my details will be published automatically as I'm registered here.

Thanks, Yard Dog. I'll try it after the soccer games (I watch thru the TV card). But just one thing. If I have programs scheduled to run at night and I run it, should I disable those? How long does a scan and fix usually take? Trying to figure out the time window.

Well, it can vary of course , depending on how much you have on your hard drive, I have alot of free space. and take it a bit to verify those. I have a 160 gig hd and it takes about a half hour for mine to run. You can set it to run on start up , which may make it easier to schedule for you. Then you would only need to allow enough time for it to run and finish up so that you can be on time for what else you need to do. What are you doing when this occurs? What area of the Navigation pane are you accessing?

The whole navigation pane: ie the left side. Desktop, Libraries, Computer... everything.

OK. Tried it and am posting the results. So I'll wait and see if the problem is solved. If it recurs I'll run it again and attempt to fix bad sectors though none were found.

Thanks, Yard Dog. I thought I did see that some files were fixed and then I looked again and didn't see it but your expertise is way beyond mine. Thanks. So far, so good. I thought I'd try scan and fix first, leaving the bad sectors for later if it recurs. If it does, I'll do scan/fix/recover and, if that doesn't work, I'll be back. Should I mark this solved?

This can be caused from crappy coded third party programs, to hardware issues, Slow hard disk etc.

You may have programs running at startup that is causing this issue. Please see this tutorial to temporary disable them and see if the issue is resolved:

Hardly an expert unless you include breaking my machines and figuring out how to fix them without incurring egregious expense at a shop where the technicians have less experience than I do at breaking things

I'm more like a kid who takes things apart to see how they go back together and if they still work.

Thanks, it's not about startup. I check that often but thanks. I think the scan/fix has fixed it for now. I'll run it again if it recurs and run check disc/fix/repair if not and then, if that doesn't work, I'll open a new thread.
