Issue: Windows 7, Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not Genuine

Sorry about posting my request elsewhere.

Here's my dilemma: I had a desktop system where I virtually replaced all components except my Intel SSD (I only have Win 7 & "programs" installed on this drive). My old OS was Win 7, 32 bit. Since I got a nice 64 bit motherboard/CPU, I purchased Win 7, 64 bit. When I got my new system started, I had all kinds of problems (so many, I can't remember all the details). When I finally got the 64 bit version of Windows 7 to install, it never did ask me to enter the Product Key!?!? It registered/kept the product key from the 32 bit version! After several weeks of trouble-free operation, I now have the "black desktop" with "Windows 7, Build 7601, This copy of Windows is not genuine." Every-time I restart windows, it want me to enter a new product key and "I know" that I'm entering the correct characters.

The following quoted info seemed like a good place to start so I followed this information:

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation - from www.malwarebytes.org and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Delete everything it finds

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Here's the result of the SFC Checker:

C:\Windows\system32>SFC /SCANNOW

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Here's the MGADiag Report, after performing the tasks stated above:

I attempted to "repair" the Windows 7 install by booting from the DVD. I got the following error message:

This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible wuth the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows.

You say that you purchased Windows 7 - where from?
The installed License Type is COA_SLP, which is not available to the general public, and can only be sold pre-installed by a major manufacturer. If you did indeed purchase this retail, then it's a counterfeit.

Does the Product Key in the report agree with the one from your purchase?
If not, use the option to change the product Key to the proper one.

The product key in the report is the correct key. I've attempted to re enter the product key to no avail.

I bought Win 7 Pro from an online retailer and can't seem to find my receipt. It's a Dell branded CD. That's what I get for thinking that I was saving money. Never had this problem before but I guess Microsoft is pickier about this now

You have a custom built PC and using an OEM Product Key ? That is counterfeit . Purchase a legit Windows 7 OEM builders version or a Retail version.

Take a look at Newegg.com

Thank VistaKing and NoelDP. I went ahead and ordered a OEM Builders version of Win 7, which I unfortunately thought I was purchasing when I bought the one I have. Oh well; live and learn!

Such scams are unfortunately common - and many people get caught by them.
It's not legal to sell OEM-Branded Windows software on the open market - and sale of OEM_SLP Keys is likewise illegal.
You should demand a refund from the vendor, and report them to the authorities and to Microsoft.

System Builders version is a 1 time install to a hardware .

Retail versions you could reinstall on as many new hardware possible.

NoelDP: I really can't believe I don't have "some" form of a receipt (email, invoice, etc) as I write-off this type of purchase for my business! If I come across it (I actually just finished doing my taxes for "last" year), I will do as you suggested - that's payback for ripping me off!

VistaKing: Thanks for that information!
