Hello squalicorax,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

If you copied these from another OS then it may be a permissions problem. You can right click on the file/properties/security tab. Click on 'Advanced'. Click on Owner tab and edit. Orrrr, you can use this tutorial to make it much easier. Context Menu - Take Ownership - Vista Forums For Vista but works in 7.

If that doesn't help then go back to the securities tab and click on your username. If you do not have full control, click on edit and again on your username. Click on Allow Full control. See if things work then.

Please keep us informed.

Gary

It's a bug, and has been reported to MS, I still have this problem occasionally, kinda random, and kinda annoying :) Here's hoping it will be fixed soon :D

Yes, some permissions settings are unavailable in this build.
There are also sections of the registry which are uneditable. I guess that's unavoidable for Beta builds and exactly why MS is doing such a big Beta program with 7.

Is the file/s you are trying to tag currently in use (either by Windows Media Player or some other third-party utility)? It may very well be that the file has been locked for exclusive access by the player program you are using.

Try closing the program and then try to tag the file/s again. You may have to wait a few seconds after closing the player before it will work.

Right.

Are you using "Right-Click,Properties,Details,Apply,OK" when tagging, or the details pane along the bottom of explorer?

Also, do you have the preview pane open on the right of Windows Explorer?

i tried both and both methods didnt work

it seems that this only affects song that existed in my prior windows vista installation seeing that a new cd in windows 7 allows me to tag it

Ok, Have you tried taking ownership of the files? And are the file marked as Read Only?

EDIT:
Yes, you have, I've just read the other posts. Check the Read Only attribute of the files...

this could be the reason for it not letting me tag it
i have full ownership
but the folder with the mp3s in it reverts back to read only as soon as i close the properties window
it says stuck at read only

There are 3 states for the Read Only Attribute on folders:
  1. Off. The check box is completely clear.
  2. On. The check box has a green checkmark in it
  3. Undefined. The check box is filled with a green square
The "Undefined" state is also used with multiple file selections where some file are marked read-only and others are not. In the case of folders, the "Undefined" state is displayed to indicate that some file within the folder may be read-only while other are not.

To force the read-only attribute off for ALL files and folder within the selected folder, do the following:
  1. Right-click the folder
  2. Select Properties
  3. In the "General" tab, make sure the "Read Only" box is clear (State "1" above)
  4. Click "Apply"
  5. In the "Confirm Attribute Changes" window that pops up, select the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" option
  6. Click "OK"
  7. Allow the attributes to be changed. This may take several minutes depending on the number of files that need to be processed.
  8. When the attributes have been applied, click the OK button in the Properties window
Notice that if you check the properties again for the folder, the "Read Only" box is once again in the "Undefined" state. This is perfectly normal behavior, so don't worry too much about it.

Try to adjust your tags again. If it still does not work, then I'm afraid that I'm out of options, and my final piece of advice would be to "Send Feedback" to Microsoft and provide as much detail as possible about the error.

In truth, this may very well be a side-effect of upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. I done a clean install of Windows 7 and have not had this problem (I don't believe in upgrade installs anyway, so I would not be affected by tis bug, if that is indeed what it is...)
